Chapter 9 - The Broken Mirror

Lily broke away from Emma’s grip. "Mommy!" she cried out, her small voice echoing through the sterile corridor.
The woman in the room froze. She turned slowly toward the glass. Her face was pale, lined with exhaustion and pain, but her dark eyes flared with sudden, overwhelming recognition.
"Lily?" Clara’s voice was faint, carried through the intercom speaker on the wall beside the door. "Grant?"
Grant rushed to the glass wall, slamming his hands against the reinforced pane. Tears burned in his eyes as he looked at his wife—the woman he had mourned for two torturous years. "Clara... Oh God, Clara..."
"Grant, you shouldn't have come!" Clara sobbed, pressing her hand against the glass opposite his. "It’s a trap! Julian wanted you to come here!"
"I don't care about Julian," Grant said fiercely. "We’re getting you out of here. Right now."
Marcus was already working on the electronic lock panel beside the door, stripping wires and connecting a bypass device. " give me thirty seconds, Mr. Callahan. This lock uses a dual-rotational code."
"Mommy!" Lily pressed her face against the glass, her hands smudging the surface. "Mommy, I kept the secret! I didn't tell the mean lady!"
Clara fell to her knees on her side of the glass, crying uncontrollably as she looked at her daughter. "My brave little girl... my sweet baby... I’m so sorry..."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the medical corridor blew inward with a violent force.
A tear gas canister clattered across the floor, spewing thick white smoke into the hallway. Through the cloud stepped four heavily armed guards led by a man in a tailored dark suit.

Julian Vane had arrived.
"How touching," Julian said, his voice cold and echoing through a tactical gas mask. "The tragic Callahan family reunion. Exactly as I planned."
