Chapter 3: The Double Agent's Protocol

The silence inside the subterranean vault shattered the instant the neon red message flashed across Elena’s wrist display:

Phase One Complete. Eliminate Julian.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. He took a half-step backward, his eyes locked onto Elena’s left eye. The soft brown iris had vanished, replaced by an artificial crimson glow that burned with terrifying precision.

“Elena...” Julian whispered, his hands raised in a defensive, pleading gesture. “Fight it. Look at me. It’s Julian!”

Elena didn’t answer with words. A low, synthetic hum resonated from her throat—a sound no human vocal cord could produce naturally. Her posture shifted instantly from that of a terrified, pregnant woman to a cold, predatory assassin. Her fingers locked around a heavy steel wrench lying on the vault’s maintenance workbench. The metal groaned under the force of her superhuman grip.

“Target identified: Julian Moretti,” Elena’s voice droned, hollow and mechanical, layered with a sickening digital rasp. “Protocol 7 initiated. Erase biological witness.”

She lunged forward with frightening speed.

Julian ducked instinctively. The heavy wrench whistled through the air, shattering the reinforced glass monitor behind him into a shower of sparkling shards. The impact sent a shockwave through the cramped vault. Julian scrambled backward on his knees, his mind racing. He couldn't fight her with full force—she was carrying his child, and her body was acting against her own will.

“Elena, stop!” Julian roared, grabbing a heavy Kevlar shield mounted on the emergency locker.

Elena swung again, the wrench slamming into the shield with the force of a hydraulic press. Julian’s arms went numb from the impact, sending him skidding across the slick steel floor. Blood trickled down his cheek where a glass fragment had cut him, but his eyes never left her face. Deep behind that cold, glowing red optic, he saw something else: tears streaming down her right cheek. Her human eye was wide with pure, helpless horror.

She was trapped inside her own body.

“Julian... I... can’t... stop it!” her voice suddenly cracked, briefly breaking through the digital filter. Her right hand flew to her left wrist, frantically trying to crush her own display device. “The chip... it took over my central nervous system when the security camera locked on! Run!”

“I’m not leaving you!” Julian yelled.

He waited for her next lunge. As Elena swung the wrench downward in a lethal arc, Julian ducked beneath her arm, stepping inside her guard. Instead of striking her, he wrapped his arms around her waist, avoiding her stomach, and pinned her back against the vault wall. Elena thrashed violently, her elbow striking his jaw with bone-jarring force. The metallic taste of blood filled Julian’s mouth, but he held on.

With his trembling right hand, Julian reached into his tactical vest and pulled out the industrial electro-discharge shocker he had used on the camera minutes before. He adjusted the side dial down to its lowest frequency—the setting designed to interrupt bio-electronic signals without stopping a human heart.

“Hold on to me, Elena,” Julian whispered into her ear. “This is going to hurt.”

He pressed the shocker against the base of her neck, right where the cybernetic collarbone circuit met her spinal column, and pulled the trigger.

A bright blue flash illuminated the vault. Elena’s body spasmed violently. A high-pitched, agonized scream tore from her throat as waves of localized electricity disrupted the neural link between her brain and the Vanguard chip. The crimson light in her left eye flickered, dimmed, and finally died out, leaving her iris a dull, natural brown once more.

Her body went completely limp. Julian caught her before she hit the floor, cradling her head gently as she gasped for air, her chest heaving in ragged sobs.

“Julian...” she wept, clutching his jacket frantically. “It was inside my head... watching everything... controlling my hands...”

“Shh, I’ve got you. It’s over for now,” Julian breathed, his own tears cutting tracks through the grime on his face.

Before they could draw another breath, a deafening explosion rocked the vault ceiling. Dust and concrete rained down upon them as the reinforced blast doors groaned under the assault of thermal explosives from the floor above. High-powered drill bits began grinding through the top hinges.

“Aegis Prime forces,” Julian said, his voice hardening. “They’re coming to finish the job.”

“We can’t go back up,” Elena gasped, pointing toward a heavy iron grate set into the far corner of the vault floor. “The maintenance shaft... it leads to the old aqueduct system beneath the estate. Richard used it to move unregistered cargo years ago.”

Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled a crowbar from the workbench, jammed it beneath the iron grate, and leveraged his weight until the rusted bolts snapped. Cold, damp air rushed up from the dark abyss below.

He helped Elena down into the narrow shaft first, ensuring her feet found the iron rungs of the ladder. Just as Julian stepped onto the first rung, the vault doors above buckled outward with a blinding flash of orange fire. Heavy tactical boots hit the floor above.

“Targets compromised!” a harsh voice barked through a comms speaker. “Search the sub-levels! Leave no survivors!”

Julian slammed the heavy grate shut behind them, threw the latch, and descended into the dark, wet tunnels beneath the mansion, leaving the gilded nightmare of his past behind.
