Chapter 4: Shadows of Vanguard Biotech

The rain outside fell in relentless, icy sheets, turning the dirt roads of Blackwood Ridge into a muddy quagmire. Nestled deep within the pine forest, miles away from the city lights, stood an abandoned, ivy-covered stone structure—an old subterranean research laboratory built by Julian’s late father three decades ago.
Julian pushed open the heavy wooden doors, half-carrying Elena while dragging Victoria’s unconscious body on an emergency transport sled he had salvaged from the aqueduct exit.
Inside, the laboratory smelled of ozone, old paper, and damp concrete. Julian hauled both women into the center of the main surgical suite. He threw the main breaker switch on the wall. Auxiliary generators whirred to life with a deep, throat-rattling hum, bathing the room in a harsh, fluorescent white glow.
He immediately lifted Victoria onto the central operating table. Her pulse was thready, her skin ice-cold to the touch. Julian tore back the collar of her burgundy silk dress. Beneath her collarbone, a faint blue glow hummed under her translucent skin—a micro-synthetic battery supplying power to the artificial incubator in her abdomen.
“How is she?” Elena asked softly, leaning against a stainless-steel counter while holding her bump. Her face was pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath her eyes.
“Her vitals are stabilizing, but her body is in shock,” Julian said, attaching biometric sensors to Victoria’s temples. “The EMP shock from the camera short-circuited her primary override chip, but the secondary system is drawing power directly from her nervous system. If I try to cut it out blindly, her heart will stop.”
He turned to a dusty computer terminal, punching in his father’s old administrative clearance code. The monitor flickered, loading a classified medical archive that hadn't been accessed in twenty-five years.
PROJECT GENESIS: DUAL-ASSET INITIATIVE > CLASSIFICATION: VANGUARD BIOTECH INTERNAL ONLY
Julian’s eyes narrowed as he scrolled through the encrypted files. High-resolution surgical schematics filled the screen, depicting human nervous systems woven with cybernetic threads.
“Look at the director’s signature,” Elena whispered, stepping up behind him.
At the bottom of every page was a crisp, digital stamp: Dr. Silas Vance, Chief Executive Officer.
“Silas Vance...” Julian muttered, his blood running cold. “Your father.”
“He isn't a father to me,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a icy whisper. “He’s a monster who treats human lives like software code. Five years ago, when I tried to leave Vanguard and marry you, he told me I belonged to the company. I thought I escaped him when I went into hiding... but he was playing us all along.”
Julian clicked on Victoria’s medical file. What he saw made his stomach churn with pure rage.
Six months ago, when Victoria was reported to be at a private wellness retreat in Switzerland during her second trimester, she had actually been abducted by Vanguard security units. They had surgically implanted an artificial neural incubator in her abdomen—a synthetic organ designed to replicate the biological environment of a real womb while harvesting genetic data from a stolen embryo.
“They didn't just clone your baby inside her,” Julian realized, his hands trembling on the keyboard. “They used Victoria as an unwitting living incubator to combine your family’s unique genetic sequence with Vanguard’s proprietary neural framework. They wanted to create a baby that would legally inherit both the Sterling estate and Vanguard’s corporate empire—a child they could control with the press of a button!”
Suddenly, Victoria let out a choked gasp from the operating table. Her eyes snapped open.

There was no red glow in her left eye—only deep, agonizing human panic. She reached out blindly, her fingers clutching Julian’s forearm with terrifying strength.
“Julian...” she sobbed, her voice raw and broken. “Julian... it hurts... please... get it out of me!”
