Chapter 6: The Siege of Blackwood Ridge

Julian didn't waste a single second. He sprinted to the laboratory’s master control panel, slamming his hand onto the emergency lockdown button. Massive steel blast shutters slammed down over every window and door with a thunderous clatter, sealing the old laboratory into a subterranean bunker.

“Julian, there are too many of them!” Elena cried out over the deafening roar of the helicopters outside. “Aegis Prime is Silas’s private military force! They have heavy armor!”

“My father didn't build this place just for research,” Julian said grimly, pulling a heavy metallic case from beneath the workbench. He flipped the latches, revealing two tactical submachine guns and several high-frequency sonic grenades. “He built it as a fallout shelter during the Cold War. The walls are three feet of reinforced concrete.”

He tossed a tactical headset to Elena. “Keep an eye on Victoria’s vitals on that monitor. If her heart rate spikes above 140, hit the blue override button on her IV. I’m going to give us an exit route.”

Suddenly, the steel blast doors at the front entrance shuddered violently as a thermite breach charge detonated outside. Blinding white sparks showered into the hallway, followed by the deep, heavy thud of a battering ram.

Julian took cover behind a reinforced steel pillar, aiming his weapon at the smoking entry hall.

The blast doors buckled inward, and four heavily armed Aegis Prime operatives flooded into the corridor, their assault rifles raised, night-vision visors glowing green in the smoke.

“Fire in the hole!” Julian yelled, pulling the pin on a sonic grenade and tossing it down the hallway.

The grenade exploded not with fire, but with a high-decibel acoustic shockwave that bounced off the concrete walls. The mercenaries shrieked in pain as the soundwaves shattered their electronic visors and overloaded their tactical headsets. They dropped their weapons, clutching their ears as blood trickled from beneath their helmets.

Julian leaned out from behind the pillar, firing precise bursts that neutralized the frontline operatives, taking them out of the fight without taking lives. But behind them stood Commander Drake—a towering, scarred mercenary wearing heavy bio-hazard power armor.

Drake fired a heavy shotgun pulse that blew the steel pillar beside Julian to pieces, sending concrete shrapnel flying into Julian’s shoulder. Julian collapsed to one knee, groaning in pain as blood soaked through his jacket.

“You’re fighting a losing war, Mr. Moretti!” Drake sneered, his voice amplified by his helmet’s speaker as he stepped over his fallen men. “Dr. Vance wants his assets back, dead or alive! Their tissue can be harvested either way!”

Drake raised his weapon, aiming straight for Julian’s head.

“Hey! Metal-head!” a voice echoed from the balcony above.

Drake looked up just in time to see Victoria standing at the railing, holding an industrial high-voltage power cable she had ripped from the main generator wall. Her face was pale, her hospital gown soaked in sweat, but her eyes burned with ferocious, unyielding fury.

“Touch my family again,” Victoria snarled, “and go to hell!”

She jammed the exposed live cable directly into the overhead sprinkler pipe.

A torrent of water rained down from the ceiling, saturating the entire hallway. The second the water touched Drake’s conductive power armor, hundreds of thousands of volts of electricity surged through his suit. Bright blue arcs of lightning exploded around him. Drake screamed as his armor short-circuited, sending him crashing heavily to the flooded floor, unconscious and smoking.

Julian gasped, looking up at Victoria in absolute awe. “Victoria... you shouldn't be standing!”

“I am a Moretti,” Victoria said, her voice shaking as she held onto the railing for support. “Nobody uses me as a weapon in my own house.”

Julian rushed up the stairs, catching her as her legs gave out, and carried her back down to the surgical suite. The primary assault team had been repelled, but they both knew it was only a matter of time before heavy artillery arrived.

Julian walked over to Drake’s fallen body, pulling a encrypted military comms tablet from the commander’s tactical vest. The screen was still active, displaying a live video link to an opulent, glass-walled executive office.

Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk was Dr. Silas Vance himself. He was a man in his late sixties, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, with cold, silver hair and piercing blue eyes that held not a trace of human warmth.

“Impressive, Julian,” Silas Vance said smoothly through the tablet speaker, sipping his brandy. “I always knew you had your father’s intelligence. But you are delaying the inevitable.”

“Your mercenaries are down, Silas,” Julian spat, staring into the camera with burning hatred. “It’s over.”

Silas chuckled softly—a dry, chilling sound. “Over? My dear boy, the grand unveiling of Vanguard’s Asset Initiative takes place at the Global Tech Summit in two hours. I have invited every major military contractor, corporate board member, and politician in the world. I will demonstrate live how our neural override chips can strip away free will entirely.”

Silas leaned closer to the camera, his smile turning razor-sharp.

“Bring them to me, Julian. Or I will remotely trigger the fail-safe charges inside Victoria and Elena’s chips. Their brains will fry live on global television, and you will watch every single second.”
