Chapter 9: Heart of the Citadel

The grand ballroom was a sea of glittering diamond jewelry, expensive suits, and floating holographic displays. At the far end of the room, on a massive black marble stage, Dr. Silas Vance stood beneath a blinding spotlight, speaking into a sleek lapel microphone.
“...What you are witnessing tonight, ladies and gentlemen,” Silas Vance’s booming voice echoed through the high-end sound system, “is not merely an advancement in biotechnology. It is the end of human error. The end of insubordination. With Vanguard’s Asset Alpha platform, complete neural synchronization is achieved.”
The crowd of billionaire investors applauded enthusiastically, sipping their crystal champagne glasses.
Silas smiled, raising his hands for quiet. “And to prove the absolute efficiency of our system... I have prepared a live demonstration.”
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a golden, wrist-mounted master control terminal. He pressed a button, lighting up the massive fifty-foot LED screen behind him.
ASSET ALPHA & BETA: ONLINE > INITIATING OVERRIDE DEMONSTRATION...
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium burst open.
“You don't need a demonstration, Silas!” Victoria’s commanding voice rang through the auditorium, cutting through the speaker system like a thunderclap. “Why don't you tell them the truth about your sick human experiments?!”
The entire room went dead silent. Hundreds of high-society guests spun around in utter shock, gasping as Victoria Moretti and Elena Vance walked down the central red-carpeted aisle, flanked by Julian.
Silas Vance froze on stage, his champagne glass hovering mid-air. For the first time in his life, genuine, unadulterated shock flickered across his icy face.
“Victoria? Elena?” Silas whispered into his microphone, before quickly recovering his cool, arrogant composure. He laughed softly, addressing the startled crowd. “Ah, it seems my beloved daughter and business associate have arrived to participate in the presentation. Do not be alarmed, ladies and gentlemen. This is all part of the showcase.”
Silas’s thumb hovered dangerously over the red override button on his wrist terminal.
“Stop right there, Julian,” Silas warned in a low, lethal whisper that carried through the room. “Take one more step, and I press this button. The lethal micro-charge inside Victoria’s collarbone will detonate instantly. Her heart will burst in front of all your precious investors.”
The crowd began to whisper nervously, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in atmosphere.
Julian stepped in front of Victoria and Elena, taking a deep breath. “Do it then, Silas,” Julian said calmly, his voice echoing in the vast hall.
Silas’s eyes narrowed. “You think I’m bluffing?”
“No,” Julian said, raising his hand, revealing a small, glowing blue cylinder in his palm. “I know you’re a monster. But you forgot one simple thing when you built your network on my brain.”
“What are you talking about?” Silas sneered.

“Subject Zero isn't your product,” Julian said, his voice ringing with fierce, unshakeable pride. “I’m your virus.”
Julian slammed the blue cylinder onto the floor.
