Chapter 3: The Price of Pride

Chapter 3: The Price of Pride
The rain began to fall over the marble plaza of Sterling Enterprises just as two heavy-set security guards escorted Richard Sterling out of the glass revolving doors. They dumped his personal belongings—a single cardboard box containing a cracked photo frame, a brass pen set, and a half-empty bottle of scotch—onto the wet pavement.
"You can't do this to me!" Richard shrieked, his manicured hands shaking as his expensive Italian leather shoes soaked up the dirty rainwater. "I am Richard Sterling! My mother’s family founded this city's social club! Call my lawyer!"
"Your lawyer just dropped you as a client, Mr. Sterling," Victor replied coldly, standing under a large black umbrella at the top of the grand granite stairs. "And per Miss Vance’s explicit instructions, your personal assets, bank accounts, and lines of credit have been frozen pending a full forensic audit of your corporate embezzlement."
A House of Cards Collapses
Less than two hours later, Richard arrived at his mother’s lavish brownstone in the city's most exclusive district. He didn't even knock; he burst through the mahogany doors, soaked to the bone and frantic.
"Mother! Chloe! We have a catastrophe!" Richard gasped, leaning against the antique entry table.
In the drawing room, his mother, Victoria Sterling, sat sipping tea alongside Chloe Belmont, Richard’s socialite fiancée—the woman he had secretly courted behind Maya’s back to secure a higher social standing. Chloe was draped in diamonds, her posture immaculate as she looked at Richard with a mixture of disgust and confusion.
"Richard, look at yourself," Victoria sneered, adjusting her pearl necklace. "You look like a vagrant. What do you mean, a catastrophe? Did the board meeting go poorly?"
"Vanguard Holdings bought us out!" Richard cried, grabbing his mother’s hands. "It was Maya! The penniless girl I discarded... she isn't an orphan! She is Marcus Vance's long-lost daughter!"
The room went dead silent. Victoria’s silver tea spoon clattered against her fine porcelain saucer. Chloe stood up slowly, her eyes narrowing into slits.
"Marcus Vance?" Victoria whispered, her face turning ashen. "The man who controls the city's port authority, the banks, and the transit grid? Richard... what did you do to her?"
"I... I gave her twenty dollars and told her to take a bus," Richard stammered, his voice shrinking into a squeak. "I thought she was a nobody!"
Chloe snapped her designer purse shut with a sharp crack. "You absolute idiot," she hissed, stepping toward the door. "You traded the sole heiress to the Vance fortune for a failing mid-tier real estate firm? And you dragged my name into your pathetic life?"
"Chloe, wait! We are still engaged!" Richard pleaded, reaching for her wrist.

Chloe slapped his hand away with brutal precision. "Engaged? To a bankrupt pauper who just declared war on the most dangerous family in the state? Consider us over, Richard. And don't ever contact my family again."

By nightfall, Victoria’s bank notified her that her estate’s mortgages—which had been quietly bought out by Vanguard subsidiaries over the past six months—were being foreclosed upon immediately due to default. The Sterling legacy had not just been defeated; it had been erased in a single afternoon.
