Chapter 5: The Gala of Reckoning

Chapter 5: The Gala of Reckoning

The annual Gotham Heritage Ball was the premier event of the season, where the city’s upper crest gathered to flaunt their wealth under the guise of philanthropy. Tonight, however, the atmosphere inside the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was charged with electric tension.
Rumors had exploded across every news outlet and social media platform: The secret Vance heiress was making her formal public debut.
Cameras flashed like strobe lights outside the entrance as black luxury limousines arrived one after another. Inside, Victoria Sterling and her disgraced son Richard managed to gain entry using forged press passes provided by Julian Thorne. Richard’s eyes were bloodshot, his suit rumpled beneath his coat, his hands trembling with a mix of rage and withdrawal.
"Keep your composure, Richard," Victoria whispered harshly, her fingers digging into his arm. "Thorne said if we create a public scene that proves she is mentally unstable, we can challenge her custody of the baby and demand a settlement."
"She ruined us, Mother," Richard muttered, his gaze searching the room frantically. "She took everything!"
Suddenly, the grand orchestra stopped playing. The ballroom fell completely silent.
At the top of the sweeping marble staircase stood Maya Vance. She was wearing a breathtaking emerald velvet gown that sculpted her silhouette with regal grace. Around her neck hung the historic Star of Vance diamond—a ninety-carat masterpiece that had not been seen in public for three decades. Beside her stood Marcus Vance, looking every bit the ruthless emperor, his eyes sweeping the room like a hawk.

The Public Execution
As Maya descended the stairs, high-society figures rushed forward, eager to curry favor with the newly crowned queen of the corporate world. But Richard pushed his way through the crowd, breaking past the loose perimeter security.
"Maya!" Richard bellowed, his voice echoing off the gilded ceiling.
The crowd gasped as Richard stepped onto the open dance floor, pointing a trembling finger at her. Security guards immediately moved toward him, but Maya raised a single slender hand, halting them in their tracks.
"Let him speak," Maya said coolly, her voice projecting effortlessly through the silent hall.
"Look at her!" Richard screamed, looking at the wealthy guests. "This woman is an impostor! A cold-hearted sociopath! She abandoned me, manipulated my company's stocks, and stole my child! She used her father's criminal money to force me onto the streets! Is this the kind of monster you invite to your galas?"
Victoria stepped up beside her son, wiping away fake tears. "She took my home! My family is on the verge of starvation because of this woman's vengeance!"
Maya stood perfectly still. She didn't flush with anger; she didn't look flustered. Instead, a calm, pitying smile touched her red lips.
She glanced toward the large projection screen behind the main stage, where the event's charity sponsors were usually displayed. She tapped a button on her secure wristwatch.
The screen flickered. Instead of charity logos, a crystal-clear high-definition video began playing.
It was security footage from the hospital parking lot from three weeks ago. The audio rang out through the ballroom speakers with painful clarity:
"Take your twenty dollars and your bastard child, Maya. You're nothing but a penniless orphan, and I'm done wasting my money on you. Don't ever call me again."
The room gasped in collective horror. High-society women covered their mouths; prominent executives shook their heads in disgust as they watched Richard throw money onto the cold pavement at a woman holding a newborn.
Next on the screen popped up official bank statements revealing Richard’s secret offshore transfers, showing millions stolen from Sterling Enterprises’ employee pension fund to finance Chloe Belmont’s jewelry collection.
Richard stood frozen, his jaw slack, his face draining of all color.
"I didn't steal your company, Richard," Maya said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried across the room. "You destroyed yourself with your own arrogance. And as for your twenty dollars..."

She reached into her emerald clutch, pulled out a crisp twenty-dollar bill, and let it flutter gently down onto Richard’s wet shoes.
"Keep the change."
