Chapter 7: The Downfall of Thorne

Chapter 7: The Downfall of Thorne

By sunrise, the Vance estate was cleared of law enforcement vehicles, their red and blue lights flashing against the morning mist. Julian Thorne and Richard Sterling were dragged out in heavy federal handcuffs, facing charges of armed burglary, attempted kidnapping, treason, and corporate espionage.
In the grand study of the estate, Marcus Vance sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing the federal indictment papers. For the first time in his life, he looked tired. His hand trembled slightly as he tried to lift his tea cup.
Clatter.
The cup slipped from his fingers, shattering on the hardwood floor. Marcus gasped, clutching his chest as his breathing became ragged and shallow.
"Father!" Maya cried, rushing into the room just as the old man slumped forward over his desk.
"Victor! Call the medical team! Now!" she ordered, dropping to her knees beside her father.
The Changing of the Guard
Two hours later, inside the private ICU of the Vance Medical Center, the lead surgeon stepped out to address Maya.
"He suffered a severe myocardial infarction, Miss Vance," the doctor explained gravely. "The surgery was successful, but Mr. Vance cannot return to high-stress corporate operations. He needs complete rest. If he goes back to work, his heart will not survive."
Maya walked into the quiet hospital room. Marcus lay on the bed, surrounded by heart monitors and IV lines. The terrifying titan of industry looked small, vulnerable, and frail.
He opened his eyes slowly, looking at his daughter. "The... board meeting is at noon," Marcus rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "Thorne's allies will try to liquidate our assets while I am incapacitated... You must stay here... let Victor handle it..."
Maya took her father’s cold, withered hand in her own, squeezing it firmly.
"No, Father," Maya said softly, her eyes blazing with absolute conviction. "You built this empire to protect our family. Now it's my turn to protect you. Rest. Vanguard Holdings is in my hands."
At 11:55 AM, the executive boardroom at Vanguard Towers was in chaos. Dozens of high-ranking shareholders were shouting, demanding to know the status of Marcus Vance's health following rumors of his heart attack.
The heavy double doors swept open.
Maya Vance walked in, wearing a sharp, impeccably tailored black suit. Behind her walked a legal team of twenty senior partners.

She took her seat at the head of the conference table—the seat that had belonged exclusively to Marcus Vance for forty years.
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," Maya announced, her voice instantly hushing the entire room. "My father is taking a well-deserved retirement. As majority shareholder and acting Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Holdings, I am calling this meeting to order. We have a lot of work to do."
