Chapter 9: The Trials of Restoration

The maximum-security state penitentiary sat isolated in a barren valley two hours outside the city. Inside the cold visitation room, separated by a thick acrylic wall, Richard Sterling sat in a orange jumpsuit. His hair was shaved, his posture slumped, his eyes hollow and defeated.

The heavy metal door opened, and Maya stepped into the room. She was accompanied by no security guards, wearing a simple blue coat.

Richard looked up, stunned. He slowly picked up the receiver on his side of the glass. Maya picked up hers.

"Why are you here?" Richard asked, his voice raspy and stripped of all pride. "To gloat? To see me in chains?"

"No, Richard," Maya answered calmly. "I came because your legal team sent me a petition asking for financial support for your mother's medical care. Victoria is living in a state facility, isn't she?"

Richard lowered his head, tears dripping onto the metallic counter. "She has dementia, Maya. She doesn't even recognize me when I call. I ruined her life. I ruined everything. I am facing thirty years in prison... and I deserve every single day."

Maya watched him quietly. There was no joy in seeing him like this—only the tragic reality of how unchecked arrogance and greed could completely destroy a human life.

"I have instructed my legal foundation to pay for your mother's care in a private nursing home for the rest of her life," Maya stated smoothly.

Richard gasped, looking at her in disbelief. "What? Why... why would you do that after what I did to you and Leo?"

"Because my son will grow up knowing that his mother was defined by mercy, not vengeance," Maya replied, her voice filled with quiet dignity. "I am also funding your appeal to reduce your sentence to ten years—on one condition."

"Anything," Richard sobbed. "I'll sign anything."

"You will sign a full, unconditional surrender of all parental claims to Leo," Maya said firmly. "You will never attempt to contact him, write to him, or claim a relationship with him. When he grows up, he will know the truth about where he came from, but he will not carry your debts or your darkness."

Richard wiped his nose with his sleeve, his hands shaking as he took the pen offered by the guard through the slot. He signed the documents without hesitation.

"Thank you, Maya," Richard choked out, looking at her with genuine, profound remorse. "I'm sorry. For everything."

Maya nodded once, taking the signed papers. "Goodbye, Richard."
