CHAPTER 12: THE WHISPERING GHOST

The high-tech command center buzzed with intense digital activity. Marcus’s cybersecurity team worked furiously, counter-hacking the incoming packets and establishing firewalls around the vulnerable archives of the Zurich bureau.
"They're not trying to steal money," Marcus noted, his face illuminated by the harsh blue light of the monitors. "They're attempting to wipe the witness protection database. They want the names and locations of every family we've rescued from Vanguard's offshore facilities."
Evelyn’s blood ran cold, but her voice remained as sharp as a razor. "Block their bypass routes. Isolate the server nodes in Zurich and route all incoming traffic into our honeypot server. I want to know who is pulling the strings."
"On it," Marcus replied, executing a series of rapid countermeasures. "Isolating node four... setting up the trap... now!"
The red banners flickered and turned green. The cyber attack was contained, diverted into a dead-end digital vault designed to capture the hacker's IP origin.
"Got them," Marcus breathed, zooming in on an encrypted IP trace routing through a proxy server in Frankfurt. "The origin trace leads back to a boutique financial advisory firm in London called Sterling & Cross Legal Consultants."
"Lord Richard Sterling," Evelyn whispered, the name immediately striking a chord. "He was Vanguard’s primary foreign investor. He sat on the advisory board of three separate global hedge funds that funneled money into Julian’s illegal research arms."
Before Marcus could answer, Evelyn’s encrypted satellite phone rang on the desk. The caller ID was completely masked—a private, untraceable frequency.
Evelyn hit speakerphone. "This is Evelyn Vance."
A raspy, distorted female voice came through the speaker, breathless and hurried. "Madame Vance... you don't know me, but I worked in the executive office of Sterling & Cross in London. You need to listen to me very carefully."
"I'm listening," Evelyn said calmly, motioning for Marcus to trace the call.
"Julian Vanguard was merely an arm of the octopus," the woman explained hurriedly. "Lord Sterling and his inner circle, known as the Apex Syndicate, are terrified of the Global Child Protection Alliance. Your speech in Geneva galvanized international law enforcement to audit foreign shell accounts. Sterling is desperate. He has hired an international PR smear firm and shadow fixers to destroy your foundation’s legal credibility from within."
"Why are you telling me this?" Evelyn asked.
"Because my daughter was one of the children your foundation saved from the Bucharest facility six months ago," the woman replied, her voice breaking with raw emotion. "You gave my baby her life back. I couldn't sit by and let them destroy you. Sterling is filing a fraudulent multi-billion-dollar lawsuit in London tomorrow morning, claiming the Alliance stole corporate assets during the Vanguard liquidation."
"Who are you?" Marcus chimed in.
"Call me Elena," the woman whispered. "Be careful, Madame Vance. Lord Sterling doesn't play by legal rules. He destroys lives."
The line went dead.

Marcus looked at Evelyn. "A multi-billion-dollar corporate lawsuit could freeze our operating accounts across Europe before we can even respond in court."
"Then we won't wait for them to serve the papers," Evelyn declared, stepping forward with absolute authority. "Pack your bags, Marcus. We are flying to London tonight."
