CHAPTER 23: THE CITADEL FALLS

CHAPTER 23: THE CITADEL FALLS

Following the recovery of the Maine server, Evelyn decided it was time to close the final chapter of her past. She flew to the federal maximum-security penitentiary in Colorado where Julian Vanguard was housed.
Walking down the cold, sterile concrete hallway accompanied by two armed guards, Evelyn entered the glass visitor room.
Julian was brought in, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair greyed, his eyes hollowed by defeat. When he saw Evelyn sitting behind the reinforced glass, his expression hardened with bitter resentment.
He picked up the phone. Evelyn picked up hers.
"Came to gloat, Evelyn?" Julian spat, his voice trembling with hidden frustration. "Came to see the fallen titan?"
Evelyn looked at him, her eyes calm, serene, and completely free of anger. "No, Julian. I came to tell you that I forgive you."
Julian froze, stunned by her words. "Forgive me? I tried to destroy you! I took your home, I tried to take Lily!"
"And you failed," Evelyn replied softly, her voice filled with profound peace. "You tried to break me, but you only broke yourself. You built a kingdom on greed, cruelty, and fear, and look where it brought you. You are trapped in a cell for the rest of your life, alone with your memories."
Julian slammed his hand against the glass. "I built Vanguard! I was a god!"
"You were a small, frightened man who mistook power for importance," Evelyn said evenly. "While you sit here in the dark, Lily is growing up surrounded by love, joy, and truth. She doesn't ask about you, Julian. She doesn't fear you. To her, you are just a bad dream that ended when the sun came up."
Julian stared at her, his lips quivering as the harsh, undeniable reality of his irrelevance crashed down upon him. The psychological grip he had once held over Evelyn was completely shattered.

"This is the last time you will ever see me, Julian," Evelyn said, standing up. "I leave you to your darkness."
She hung up the phone and walked out of the room without looking back. Behind the glass, Julian sank into his chair, weeping silently into his hands as the heavy steel doors slammed shut forever.
