CHAPTER 15: THE GOLDEN CAGE

CHAPTER 15: THE GOLDEN CAGE

The evening rain tapped rhythmically against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the estate's living room. Lily sat on the plush rug, coloring a picture of a sunlit meadow, completely unaware of the peril that had brushed past her hours before.
Evelyn sat on the sofa beside her, gently stroking Lily’s hair as she read her a bedtime story. Every brush of Lily's soft locks reminded Evelyn of why she fought so relentlessly.
"Mommy?" Lily asked, looking up with big, innocent eyes. "Why does Mr. Marcus watch the windows so much?"
Evelyn smiled softly, kissing her daughter’s forehead. "Because Mr. Marcus is making sure that only good things come into our home, sweetheart. He’s taking care of us."
"I like Mr. Marcus," Lily said sweetly, leaning her head against Evelyn’s knee. "He makes me feel safe. Like Daddy never did."
The words hit Evelyn right in her chest, a mixture of poignant sorrow for the past and overwhelming gratitude for the present. Marcus, who stood quietly near the doorway watching over them, met Evelyn’s eyes. A deep, tender warmth passed between them—a silent acknowledgment of the family they were slowly, beautifully becoming amidst the storm.
Once Lily was sound asleep in her room, Evelyn joined Marcus on the outdoor covered terrace. The cool night air was filled with the scent of pine and fresh rain.
"She trusts you, Marcus," Evelyn said gently, standing beside him as they looked out over the illuminated gardens.
"I’d give my life for her, Evelyn," Marcus replied without hesitation, turning to face her. "And for you. You know that, right?"
Evelyn looked up into his dark, steady eyes. The professional boundaries that had once separated them had long since melted away, replaced by an unbreakable bond forged through loyalty, sacrifice, and unspoken love.
"I do know," Evelyn whispered, reaching out to softly touch his arm. "And I don't want you risking your life, Marcus. I need you here. With us."
Marcus reached up, wrapping his fingers gently over hers. "I'm not going anywhere, Evelyn. We finish this together."
Their moment was interrupted by a chime on Marcus’s phone. A high-priority intelligence brief had arrived from their legal contacts in Switzerland.

"It's time," Marcus said, his tone shifting back to sharp tactical precision. "The Managing Director of Banque de Genève, Jean-Paul Laurent, is attending an exclusive closed-door gala in Zurich tomorrow night. Lord Sterling will be there in person to meet with the rest of the Apex Syndicate."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed with deadly focus. "A room full of monsters in expensive suits. Perfect. It saves us the trouble of hunting them down one by one."
