CHAPTER 5 : THE WEB UNRAVELS

CHAPTER 5 : THE WEB UNRAVELS

As the weeks melted into summer, the federal case against Julian Vance and Victoria Sterling transformed into one of the most high-profile legal spectacles of the decade. The Department of Justice spared no expense in presenting an airtight case of grand financial fraud, conspiracy, and aggravated assault.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity every single day. Reporters from all over the world lined the corridors hours before the doors opened, desperate to catch a glimpse of the fallen billionaire and his glamorous, disgraced fiancée.

On the defense side, the desperation was palpable. Julian’s high-priced legal team, realizing that a guilty verdict was inevitable, tried a desperate strategy: total deflection. They argued that Julian had been emotionally manipulated by Victoria, claiming he was completely unaware of her illicit actions at the charity gala and merely reacted out of sudden, situational stress when he believed a family heirloom had been stolen.

It was a pathetic, transparent lie—and the prosecution was more than ready to dismantle it piece by piece.

Evelyn Vance took the witness stand on a crisp Tuesday morning. She wore a sharp, impeccably tailored navy-blue suit that commanded immediate respect. Her posture was regal, her expression calm and unflinching as she looked out over the crowded courtroom.

The lead prosecutor, a sharp-witted trial attorney named Sarah Jenkins, guided Evelyn through her testimony with practiced ease.

"Ms. Vance, as the lead prosecutor for the financial crimes division, when did your team first flag Julian Vance’s offshore accounts?" Sarah asked, standing firmly behind the podium.

"Over eight months ago," Evelyn answered, her clear, ringing voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Our investigation revealed a systematic pattern of tax evasion, fraudulent asset valuation, and intentional insurance over-insuring. Julian Vance was deliberately orchestrating a multi-million-dollar insurance scam, using his upcoming charity gala as the staging ground for a staged robbery."

Across the room, Julian sat at the defense table, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. He gripped the edge of the wooden table so tightly his knuckles turned white, glaring at Evelyn with undisguised hatred.

"And regarding the incident on the night of the gala," Sarah continued, stepping closer to the jury box. "Could you describe for the court what transpired when Mr. Vance confronted your daughter?"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Evelyn’s dark eyes shifted from the jury to look directly at Julian, holding his gaze with a terrifying, predator-like intensity.

"Mr. Vance allowed his arrogance and blind prejudice to dictate his actions," Evelyn stated clearly, every word landing like a hammer blow. "Without a single shred of proof, without verifying security protocols, and driven entirely by his desperate need to protect the illusion of his wealth, he physically assaulted an innocent six-year-old child. He struck her, causing bodily harm, all to shield his fiancée’s theft and advance his fraudulent insurance claim."

"Objection! Speculation!" Julian’s lead defense attorney shouted, springing to his feet.

"Overruled," the judge snapped immediately, adjusting his glasses. "The witness is speaking to documented video evidence and her direct observations. Continue, Ms. Vance."

"There is nothing left to speculate," Evelyn concluded, her voice steady and powerful. "The evidence is absolute. The corruption is total. And the accountability is inescapable."

When Evelyn stepped down from the witness stand, a wave of awed whispers rippled through the gallery. Even the defense attorneys looked defeated, quietly shuffling their papers without looking up at their client.
