CHAPTER 13: THE AMBUSH AT DAWN

The morning fog hung thick over the streets of London as Evelyn’s armored convoy pulled up to the historic Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand. Flashbulbs erupted immediately as dozens of journalists and paparazzi swarmed the sidewalk. News of Lord Sterling’s sudden emergency filing against the Child Safety and Legal Defense Fund had already leaked to the press, sparking a frenzy.

Headline chyrons across global news broadcasts read: HERO OR HOAX? GLOBAL ALLIANCE ACCUSED OF ASSET DIVERSION.

Evelyn stepped out of the vehicle, wearing an immaculate navy-blue tailored suit. Beside her, Marcus moved with quiet, vigilant presence, his sharp eyes scanning the crowds for potential physical threats.

"Madame Vance! Are the allegations true?" a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. "Did your foundation misappropriate funds during Vanguard's bankruptcy?"

Evelyn paused on the stone steps, facing the sea of cameras. She didn't look flustered or defensive; her posture radiated absolute poise.

"The Global Child Protection Alliance operates with total financial transparency," Evelyn stated clearly, her voice cutting through the chaotic media noise. "Every dollar we receive goes directly toward saving lives, offering legal protection, and rehabilitating innocent children. The allegations brought forward today by Lord Sterling are nothing more than a desperate attempt by corporate corruption to survive its imminent exposure."

She turned and walked into the grand marble hallway of the courthouse.

Inside Courtroom 4, Lord Richard Sterling sat at the plaintiff's table. He was a silver-haired aristocrat in his late sixties, clad in a bespoke suit, radiating cold, entitled arrogance. Beside him sat a team of high-powered corporate litigators.

When Evelyn took her seat at the defense table, Sterling looked over, offering a sinister, mocking smile.

"Madame Vance," Sterling whispered across the aisle as the court prepared to convene. "You should have stayed in your comfortable little estate. Rebuilding a life requires humility. Tearing down men like me requires power you simply do not possess."

Evelyn met his cold gaze without flinching. "Power built on the suffering of children isn't power, Lord Sterling. It's a disease. And I am the cure."

The judge entered, slamming the gavel. "Court is now in session. Plaintiff, present your motion for an emergency injunction to freeze the defendant’s assets."

Sterling’s lead counsel stood up, delivering a slick, aggressive presentation alleging that Evelyn’s foundation had illegally seized proprietary technology and intellectual property from Vanguard Corporation during its collapse.

When it was Evelyn's turn, she didn't send her lawyers to the podium. She stood up herself, stepping forward as lead counsel for her own organization.

"Your Honor," Evelyn began, her voice echoing with profound authority. "The plaintiff claims we took assets. What we actually took were children out of human trafficking rings funded by companies Lord Sterling owns. And today, I submit into evidence Bank of England transaction logs proving that Lord Sterling personally authorized thirty million dollars in transfers to Vanguard shell companies."

She slammed a thick black binder onto the podium.

"These documents were verified three hours ago by the UK Serious Fraud Office," Evelyn continued. "This lawsuit isn't a legal claim. It is an abuse of process designed to muzzle justice."

Lord Sterling’s arrogant smile instantly vanished. His lawyers began panicking, whispering frantically as the judge reviewed the stamped government documents.
