Chapter 3: The Weight of the Secret

The aftermath of the gala was not a quiet retreat into domestic bliss; it was a firestorm. By sunrise, the scandal had been splashed across every major news outlet. Julian Blackwood, the billionaire philanthropist known for his cool, detached demeanor, was now the central figure of a tabloid obsession. The public was hungry to know who the child was, how she had remained hidden in the wings of his life, and why he had been willing to burn his social reputation to the ground to protect her.

Julian sat in his private study, the room filled with the scent of old leather and the blue light of flickering screens. He was no longer playing the role of the perfect heir. He was a man cornered by his own history. His mother, Eleanor, stood by the fireplace, her silhouette as sharp and unforgiving as a knife.

"You have destroyed the Blackwood name," she said, her voice devoid of emotion. "For a child who is, at best, a complication. You have invited the wolves to our doorstep, Julian. Do you have any idea how much effort I spent shielding our business interests from your... personal whims?"

Julian looked up, his eyes weary but defiant. "You didn't shield the business, Mother. You shielded your own ego. The child isn't a complication—she is my daughter. And she is the only thing in this life that has ever mattered more than the balance sheet."

"She is a liability," Eleanor countered, stepping closer. "And as long as she is here, she is a target. You think that woman leaving the gala was the end? People like that don't just disappear. They look for weaknesses. And you, my son, have just given them the perfect map to your heart."

Julian didn't answer. He knew she was right about the danger, but he refused to accept that love was a weakness.
