Chapter 12: A Stranger in the House

Within forty-eight hours, the estate had transformed from a sanctuary into a battlefield. Armed with a temporary court injunction and a team of ruthless corporate lawyers, Eleanor forced her way into the estate's East Wing. The judge, bewildered by the authenticity of the notary seal on the document, mandated that Eleanor and Leo reside on the property until a full forensic audit of the estate could be completed.
The atmosphere in the house was suffocating. Clara kept Maya close to her at all times, restricting her to the West Wing.
Late one night, Clara walked down to the kitchen for a glass of water. As she passed the grand hallway, she heard a soft, muffled crying. She paused, following the sound to the library. There, curled under the massive oak desk, was little Leo. He was clutching a small, worn-out plush bear, shivering in the dark.
"Leo?" Clara whispered softly, crouching down. "Are you alright, sweetie?"
The boy flinched, scrambling backward. "Don't tell her," he pleaded, his voice breaking. "Please don't tell the mean lady I'm out of my room. She said I have to be the 'perfect heir' or she’ll send me back to the cold place."

Clara’s heart broke. The maternal instinct within her flared, fierce and protective. This child wasn't an intruder; he was a hostage.
"I won't tell anyone," Clara said, gently sliding a warm blanket over his small shoulders. As she looked into the boy's eyes, she realized the terrifying truth. Eleanor wasn't just stealing the foundation; she was destroying an innocent child to do it. Clara knew she had to expose Eleanor, not just for her family's sake, but to save Leo.
