Chapter 9: The Healer's Touch

Two weeks after Victor Sterling’s arrest, the county jail visitation room was quiet and sterile.

Clara sat on one side of a thick glass partition, dressed in a simple cream-colored sweater. Sitting on the other side of the glass was Eleanor Vance.

The once-arrogant matriarch was unrecognizable. Her luxurious mink coat was gone, replaced by a coarse gray jumpsuit. Her hair was messy, her manicured nails were chipped, and her shoulders were slumped in utter defeat. Eleanor’s trial was scheduled for the following month, with legal experts predicting a twenty-year sentence for her role in the massive embezzlement and forgery scheme.

Eleanor stared at Clara through the glass, her dark eyes filled with a bitter mixture of shame, confusion, and lingering resentment.

"Why are you here, Clara?" Eleanor asked, her voice raspy and dry. "Did you come to taunt me? To watch the great Eleanor Vance rot in a cell?"

Clara looked at her former tormentor with a quiet, calm compassion that caught Eleanor completely off guard.

"I didn't come to taunt you, Eleanor," Clara said softly through the small intercom speaker. "I came to tell you that Maya is doing well. She asks about you sometimes."

Eleanor froze, her breathing hitching in her throat. She quickly looked down at her lap, her hands trembling. "She... she shouldn't remember me. I was terrible to her."

"You were consumed by fear and greed," Clara said gently. "You believed that without money and power, you were nothing. You sacrificed your son’s happiness and your granddaughter's love just to maintain an illusion."

Tears well-up in Eleanor’s aged eyes, slipping down her wrinkled cheeks. For five years, she had treated Clara like dirt, yet here was Clara, standing before her with dignity, offering grace instead of vengeance.

"Ethan... does Ethan hate me?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

"Ethan is hurt," Clara answered honestly. "He loved you as his mother. But he has chosen to protect his family. He won't visit you yet, Eleanor. But he has instructed his legal team to ensure you receive proper medical care while you serve your time."

Eleanor covered her face with her hands, weeping quietly against the glass barrier. The heavy mask of righteous arrogance she had worn for decades had finally shattered, leaving behind a broken woman who had traded true love for empty gold.

"Thank you, Clara..." Eleanor sobbed, her voice barely audible. "I’m... I’m so sorry for what I did to you and Maya."

Clara nodded slowly, resting her palm against the glass partition. "I forgive you, Eleanor. Not for your sake, but for ours. So my daughter can grow up in a world without bitterness."

Clara stood up and walked out of the visitor room, stepping into the warm afternoon sunlight, completely free from the emotional chains of her past.
