Chapter 4: Shadows at the Gala

The news of Julian Vance’s sudden return to Chicago’s financial district sent shockwaves through high society. The former outcast had re-emerged as the managing director of Sovereign Trust, the shadow investment firm controlling Apex Holdings. To celebrate his return and publicize his legal challenge against Clara’s estate claim, Julian organized a lavish charity gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel—the very venue where the Montgomery family had hosted philanthropic events for generations.
By 8:00 PM, the grand ballroom was packed with news cameras, high-society elite, and corporate executives.
At the edge of the ballroom, the double oak doors swung open.
Conversations died down instantly. Flashbulbs erupted like a storm of white light.
Ethan stepped into the room wearing a tailored midnight-black tuxedo. On his arm was Clara, stunning in a emerald green silk gown that draped gracefully over her frame. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and around her neck gleamed a delicate sapphire pendant—the original Montgomery family heirloom that Eleanor had tried to steal years ago. Beside them walked little Maya, wearing a simple white dress, holding her father’s hand with quiet confidence.
Julian Vance, a tall man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair and cold, reptilian eyes, stood near the raised stage sipping champagne. His arrogant smile faded slightly as he watched the trio walk calmly into his event.
"Julian," Ethan said, his deep voice carrying clearly over the soft classical music playing in the background.
Julian handed his champagne flute to a nearby waiter and stepped down from the platform, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. "Ethan. My dear nephew. And the brave, resurrected heiress, Clara. I must admit, I didn't expect you to have the audacity to show your faces here tonight."

"We didn't come to attend your party, Julian," Clara said, her voice dripping with calm, lethal composure. "We came to return something that belongs to you."
Julian chuckled softly, looking around at the circle of wealthy onlookers who had gathered to watch the confrontation. "My dear girl, you may have put poor Eleanor behind bars, but legal title to Apex Holdings is tied up in international arbitration. You don't have the standing or the capital to challenge my position."
"We don't need international arbitration, Uncle Julian," Ethan interjected, stepping forward and towering over his uncle. "We have the original board minutes from 1996."
Julian’s eyes flicked with a sudden, microscopic twitch of fear. "What board minutes?"
Clara pulled a small, sealed velvet folder from her silk clutch. "Thirty years ago, when my father Arthur Montgomery established the foundation, he included a self-executing clawback provision. If any trustee or secondary partner attempted to convert the foundation's public assets into private capital, all voting rights instantly revert to Arthur Montgomery’s direct biological heir."
She opened the folder, displaying a yellowed parchment bearing the embossed gold seal of the State Supreme Court.
"As of 4:00 PM today," Clara announced, turning her gaze toward the surrounding news cameras, "the State Attorney General signed an emergency decree recognizing me as the sole legal trustee of Apex Holdings. Every bank account, offshore trust, and real estate asset held by Sovereign Trust under Julian Vance’s name has been officially frozen."
Gasps rippled through the elite crowd. Several prominent board members standing behind Julian subtly took two steps back, distancing themselves from the man who had promised them millions in returns.
Julian’s face drained of color. His slick demeanor vanished, replaced by a desperate, ugly grimace. "This is a fraud! You forged those documents just like Eleanor!"
"The only fraud in this room is standing right in front of me," Clara replied coldly, her dark eyes unyielding. "You used Eleanor’s greed to drain my father's life work. But you forgot one simple truth, Julian."
She took Ethan’s hand, holding it high in front of the flashing cameras.

"Truth doesn't decay under locked doors. It waits. And now, your time is up."
Two federal agents in trench coats stepped through the ballroom entrance, making a direct line toward Julian. The trap had sprung, and high society watched in stunned silence as another tyrant of the Vance dynasty fell to his knees.
