Chapter 11: The Uninvited Guest

The sweet melody of the piano still lingered in the warm afternoon air when the heavy iron gates of the Montgomery Estate groaned open. The applause from the crowd faded into a confused murmur as a sleek, midnight-black town car rolled up the gravel driveway, completely ignoring the valet signs.

Ethan’s smile tightened. He instinctively stepped in front of Clara and Maya, his protective gaze locking onto the vehicle. The chauffeur stepped out, opening the rear door. Out stepped a woman in a razor-sharp crimson suit. She wore oversized dark sunglasses and carried a worn, leather-bound briefcase. Beside her was a small, fragile-looking boy, no older than seven, clutching the hem of her jacket with trembling fingers.

"A beautiful speech, Clara," the woman said, pulling off her sunglasses. Her voice was like crushed glass—sharp and grating.

A collective gasp rippled through the older board members. Arthur Pendelton dropped his glass of cider.

"Eleanor," Ethan breathed, his voice laced with disbelief and a sudden, rising anger. "You have no right to be here. You were exiled from this family a decade ago."

Eleanor Montgomery, Ethan’s estranged step-aunt, offered a chilling, perfectly rehearsed smile. "Exiled? Oh, Ethan, darling. I wasn't exiled. I was waiting." She lifted the leather briefcase. "Waiting for the right time to present your father's final amendment to his will. The one he entrusted only to me."

She pushed the young boy forward. The child looked terrified, his large brown eyes darting around the crowd.

"Everyone, meet Leo," Eleanor announced, her voice echoing across the sudden silence of the courtyard. "Arthur Montgomery’s youngest, secret biological son. And according to this legally binding codicil, the sole inheritor of the Montgomery Estate and its foundation."

Clara felt a cold dread wash over her. The dark clouds hadn't disappeared; they had only been gathering strength.
