Chapter 6: The Architect of Deceit

Ethan, Clara, and Maya walked out onto the grand stone portico of the mansion. Standing at the base of the marble steps was an elderly man in a bespoke charcoal wool coat, leaning heavily on an silver-headed cane. His sharp blue eyes were cold as ice, assessing the grand estate with the calculating gaze of a landlord inspecting a property he intended to demolish.

Flanking him were two large security guards in dark suits.

"Victor Sterling," Clara said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the stone courtyard. "You are trespassing on private property."

Victor Sterling offered a slow, cold smile, leaning both hands onto his silver cane. "Private property? Ah, my dear Clara, you have your father’s sharp tongue, but alas, you lack his understanding of complex real estate law."

Ethan stepped down the first stair, his posture commanding and protective. "State your business, Sterling, before I have my estate security remove you from these grounds."

Sterling chuckled softly, a rasping sound that echoed unpleasantly against the stone walls. "Your estate security answers to the county sheriff, Mr. Vance. And the county sheriff operates under state municipal jurisdiction. I come bearing official notice from the State Commerce Commission."

He gestured to one of his assistants, who stepped forward and handed Ethan a thick legal document stamped with a gold state seal.

"What is this?" Ethan demanded, scanning the first page.

"It is an order of eminent domain," Sterling explained smoothly. "Thirty years ago, when your father and Arthur Montgomery constructed this magnificent estate, they built the northern wing over a designated state water reservoir zone. Your father bribed municipal officers to bury the survey reports."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. "That's a lie! My father was an honorable architect!"

"Your father was a visionary, my dear, but he was also human," Sterling countered, his eyes narrowing. "Eleanor Vance knew about the environmental violation. That’s why she sold me the northern land development rights five years ago—to keep me from exposing the truth and having this entire mansion condemned."

Sterling took two steps up the stone stairs, his silver cane clicking sharply against the marble.

"I am offering you a choice, Clara," Sterling said, his tone dropping to a low, sinister purr. "Sign over the remaining forty percent of the Montgomery Trust shares to Sterling International by Friday at noon. In exchange, I will permanently seal the environmental violation files, and you may keep this house. Refuse... and state bulldozers will tear this mansion down to the ground by next month."

Maya buried her face in Ethan’s jacket, crying softly. "Daddy, don't let the bad man break our house..."

Ethan reached down, picking up his daughter and holding her tightly against his chest. He looked at Victor Sterling with an unyielding flame burning in his eyes.

"My wife’s father built this house on truth, Sterling," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble. "And we are going to tear your lies apart piece by piece. Get off our land."

Sterling’s cold smile vanished. "Friday at noon, Mr. Vance. Don't let your foolish pride make your daughter homeless."
