CHAPTER 14: THE RECKONING OF JUSTICE

CHAPTER 14: THE RECKONING OF JUSTICE

Six months after the trial, the legal process reached its final, decisive milestone.

Inside the state penitentiary, Victoria Sterling sat in a small, sterile visitation room, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit. The vast fortune that once allowed her to command armies of lawyers and security forces was gone—seized by court order and redistributed as restitution to the hundreds of families her syndicate had victimized over the decades.

The heavy door opened, and Marcus Vance stepped into the room. He wore a sharp, tailored suit, looking healthy, vibrant, and completely at peace. He sat down across from her behind the clear partition glass.

Victoria looked at him through tired, hollow eyes. The arrogant smirk that once defined her face was completely gone, replaced by deep lines of defeat.

"Did you come to gloat, Marcus?" she asked, her voice raspy and devoid of its former power. "To mock me now that I have nothing?"

"No, Victoria," Marcus replied calmly, picking up the internal phone. "I came here to tell you that the restitution fund has been finalized. Every dollar taken from Sarah’s foundation, from the public infrastructure, and from innocent families has been returned."

Victoria let out a bitter, dry laugh. "You think giving money back changes anything? I built an empire!"

"You built a cage," Marcus corrected her gently. "And now you are sitting inside it. I didn't come here out of hatred, Victoria. I came here to tell you that I forgive you."

Victoria froze, staring at him in complete disbelief. "You... forgive me? After everything I did to your family? After I tried to murder your daughter?"

"Holding onto hatred for you would only give you power over my life," Marcus said softly, his voice filled with profound grace. "I forgive you so that my daughter and I can live without anger. Your actions no longer define our future. The court has spoken, justice has been served, and we are moving forward."

Victoria sat in stunned silence as Marcus gently hung up the phone receiver, stood up, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back.

For the first time in her life, Victoria Sterling realized the true depth of her defeat. She had lost not because her enemies were more ruthless, but because their moral strength was something her wealth could never break.
