CHAPTER 6: INSIDE THE HIVE

CHAPTER 6: INSIDE THE HIVE

Night fell over the city once again, draping the steel-and-glass monolith of the Sterling Research Center in shadows. The sixty-story tower gleamed like a dark needle pointing toward the stormy sky, surrounded by perimeter fences and high-resolution security cameras.
Parked three blocks away in a stolen utility van, Liam adjusted a headset while monitoring multiple digital schematics on his laptops.
"Internal security feeds are looped," Liam reported, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I’ve bypassed the outer gate cameras for a twelve-minute window. Marcus, you’re on comms and perimeter distraction. Evelyn, you and I go through the subterranean maintenance intake."
Evelyn adjusted her dark attire, checking the small keycard reader and hardware cloner strapped to her belt. "I remember the route. The old sub-level lab is behind the main climate control junction."
"Remember," Marcus said over the radio, his voice strained with tension from his vantage point on a neighboring rooftop. "If security flags your physical presence, abandon the objective instantly. I have a sniper rifle loaded with non-lethal tranquilizer rounds to clear your extraction, but I can only cover the exterior plaza."
"Understood," Evelyn replied. She looked at Liam and nodded. "Let's go."
Slipping through the shadows of the alleyway, Evelyn and Liam reached the external ventilation grate of the research facility. Liam used a silent hydraulic cutter to slice through the iron latches, and the two slid into the dark, echoing metal duct.
They navigated the narrow maze of vents with practiced efficiency. Evelyn led the way, her smaller frame allowing her to move effortlessly through the tight spaces. Every few minutes, they paused as security guards walked past directly beneath the grates, their footsteps echoing heavily in the stillness.
Finally, they reached the lowest sub-level—a forgotten, dusty corridor with flicking fluorescent lights, far beneath the polished, modern upper floors.
"This is it," Evelyn whispered, stopping before a heavy, reinforced steel door marked ARCHIVE SUB-STATION 04. The electronic lock was red, powered by an isolated backup generator.
Liam attached a hardware bypass tool to the lock's wiring panel. "It’s an older 256-bit encryption lock. It’s going to take ninety seconds to crack."
"Make it sixty," Evelyn warned, hearing the faint hum of an elevator descending toward their floor. "Someone is coming down."
"Work in progress..." Liam muttered, sweat dripping from his chin onto the keypad. "Fifty percent... seventy percent..."
The elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged loudly.
"Liam!" Evelyn hissed.
"Got it!"
The lock turned green with a soft click. Liam shoved the door open, and they both slipped inside, closing the heavy steel portal just as two heavily armed guards stepped out into the hallway.
Inside, the laboratory was frozen in time. Dust covered the workbenches, glass beakers, and computer terminals. In the center of the room stood a heavy, spherical iron vault embedded directly into the concrete bedrock—Sarah Vance’s private, secure server archive.
Evelyn walked up to the sphere. On its front panel was a physical keypad and an analog fingerprint scanner. She placed her palm over the glass.
"Identity verification required," a automated synthetic voice chimed softly from the console.
"Access code: Sarah’s Promise," Evelyn spoke clearly into the receiver, placing her fingers over the keys and typing the date of her mother’s birthday.
For a terrifying second, nothing happened. Then, a deep mechanical clunk echoed through the room. High-pressure air hissed as the heavy iron vault unsealed itself, swinging open to reveal a single, glowing silver hard drive mounted on a gold-plated pedestal.
"We found it," Liam breathed in awe. "The master ledger."
Before Evelyn could reach for the drive, the emergency lights in the laboratory flashed blood-red, and a mechanical lock slammed down over the vault door, trapping the drive inside.

Over the intercom system, a familiar, chilling voice echoed through the dark room.
"Did you truly believe I wouldn't monitor my own late employee’s office?" Victoria Sterling’s voice purred over the speakers, cold and dripping with venom. "Thank you for leading me right to it, child."
