CHAPTER 9: THE TRAP AT BLACKWOOD DOCKS

CHAPTER 9: THE TRAP AT BLACKWOOD DOCKS

The Blackwood Docklands were a ghost town of rusting shipping containers, rotting wooden piers, and looming industrial cranes jutting into the dark, foggy harbor. The icy sea wind howled through the steel structures, creating an eerie, atmospheric moan.
At the center of an open concrete pier stood Marcus Vance, bound securely to a metal chair beneath the glaring illumination of heavy halogen work lights. Blood dripped from a cut above his left eyebrow, but his posture remained rigid, his jaw set in defiance.
Standing a few feet away, sheltered beneath a black umbrella held by a bodyguard, was Victoria Sterling. She wore an elegant wool coat, sipping hot espresso from a porcelain cup as if attending a private art viewing rather than a kidnapping.
"You really are a stubborn man, Marcus," Victoria said smoothly, her voice echoing across the silent water. "You could have taken my settlement five years ago. You could have taken your daughter and lived a quiet, comfortable life in obscurity. But your absurd sense of morality ruined everything."
Marcus spat blood onto the cold pavement at her feet. "My wife died protecting the truth from corrupt monsters like you, Victoria. You can kill me, but you will never erase what Sarah left behind. Evelyn is stronger than you think. She will never give up."
Victoria laughed—a high, mocking sound that cut through the sound of crashing waves. "Your daughter is a child playing a game she doesn't understand. She will crawl here within the hour, hand over the drive in a pathetic attempt to save your life, and then... well, neither of you will ever be heard from again."
Suddenly, the heavy glare of headlights pierced the thick fog.
A single black utility van drove slowly onto the pier, stopping fifty yards away from Victoria’s security perimeter. The driver’s side door opened, and Evelyn stepped out into the rain. She was alone, wearing her rain jacket, holding a glowing steel case in her right hand.
Victoria’s eyes lit up with predatory triumph. "Ah. The brave little hero arrives."
"Where is my father?" Evelyn demanded, her voice carrying across the pier with remarkable strength and clarity.
Victoria stepped forward, gesturing toward the tied figure under the halogen lights. "He is right here, unharmed—for now. Hand over the case, Evelyn, and I might just let him live out his days in a quiet cell."
Marcus raised his head, screaming desperately through his bruises: "Evelyn, NO! Don't give it to her! Run!"
A guard violently struck Marcus across the shoulder with a baton, forcing him back down. Evelyn’s fists clenched, her eyes blazing with rage, but she forced herself to remain standing tall.
"I brought the drive, Victoria," Evelyn said, holding the glowing case higher. "Everything my mother uncovered. Every illegal bank transfer, every bribed official, every life you destroyed to build your fortune. It’s all in here."
"Smart girl," Victoria purred, motioning for two heavily armed guards to advance and take the case. "Hand it over, and this night finally ends."
May you like
Evelyn smiled—a cold, confident, dangerous smile that made Victoria’s smile instantly freeze.
"You're right, Victoria," Evelyn said softly. "This night does end. But not the way you think."
