Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN AT THE FRONT DOOR The rain had stopped less than an hour before Elena arrived at the Vance estate.

Water still clung to the black iron gates, reflecting the pale afternoon sky like shards of broken glass. Beyond them stood a mansion so enormous that Elena felt, for one brief second, as though she had stepped into another world.
She tightened her grip around her old canvas bag.
Beside her stood Lily, her seven-year-old daughter, clutching a small wooden horse with both hands.
“Mommy,” Lily whispered, “is this where we live now?”
Elena looked down at her daughter.
“Only for a while, sweetheart.”
She forced a smile.
But inside, she was terrified.
The live-in housekeeper position was supposed to be a temporary solution. After years of financial hardship, unpaid bills, and landlords who no longer wanted to hear excuses, Elena had reached the point where pride could no longer pay for groceries.
She needed this job.
More importantly, Lily needed a safe place to sleep.
Elena pressed the doorbell.
A deep chime echoed through the mansion.
Several seconds passed.
Then the enormous wooden door opened.
Victoria Vance stood there.
She was elegant, beautiful, and perfectly dressed in a white designer dress. Her blonde hair was arranged without a single strand out of place.
Her eyes, however, were cold.
“You must be the new maid.”
“Elena Morales,” Elena replied quietly. “Yes, ma’am.”
Victoria's gaze dropped to Lily.
“And who is she?”
“My daughter.”
Victoria's expression immediately hardened.
“I hired a housekeeper. Not a babysitter.”
Elena swallowed.
“She won't disturb anyone. Lily is very quiet.”
Victoria stepped aside.
“Fine. Keep her in the back rooms.”
Elena hesitated.
“Thank you.”
“Don't thank me yet.”
Victoria turned away.
Elena took Lily's hand and entered.
The mansion was breathtaking.
Marble floors stretched beneath enormous chandeliers. Paintings covered the walls. A polished staircase curved upward toward the second floor.
Lily stared at everything in wonder.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “it's like a castle.”
Elena squeezed her hand.
“Don't stare too much.”
They reached the kitchen, where Victoria pointed toward a tiny staff room.
“You'll sleep there.”
Elena nodded.
She put down her bag and immediately began working.
For the next hour, she scrubbed counters, polished silverware, and wiped fingerprints from the enormous windows.
Lily sat quietly in the corner with her wooden horse.
Then the front door opened.
Heavy footsteps crossed the foyer.
Elena froze.
She knew that walk.
Her hand stopped halfway across the marble counter.
A man's voice echoed through the hallway.
“Victoria? I'm home.”
Seven years disappeared in an instant.
Elena turned.
A tall man in a dark suit entered the kitchen.
Ethan Vance.
Her first love.
The man she had once believed she would marry.
The man who had searched for her after she vanished.
His briefcase slipped from his hand.
“Elena?”
Her heart stopped.
Ethan stared at her as though he were looking at a ghost.
“Is that really you?”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“Yes, Mr. Vance.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“I searched everywhere for you.”
Before Elena could answer, Victoria entered the kitchen.
She immediately noticed the look between them.
Her expression changed.
“Darling,” she said softly, “why don't you come upstairs?”
But Ethan wasn't listening.
A tiny figure had appeared behind Elena.
Lily.
Ethan looked at the little girl.
Something about her face struck him with inexplicable force.
Her brown eyes.
Her chin.
Even the slight tilt of her head.
Ethan stared.
“Who is that?”
Elena's fingers tightened around the cleaning cloth.
“My daughter.”
Ethan slowly knelt.
“What is her name?”
“Lily.”
He smiled despite himself.
“Hello, Lily.”
The little girl stared back.
Then, without understanding why, she whispered the word that would change everything.
“Daddy?”
May you like
Ethan's face went completely pale.
And behind him, Victoria's smile disappeared.
