Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH EXPLODES Ethan's voice shook with fury.

“Victoria, step away from them.”
“She attacked me!”
Ethan looked at the broken cabinet.
“No.”
His eyes moved to the wooden stick.
“You were holding that.”
Victoria's confidence vanished.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Elena slowly stood.
Her cheek was red from the near impact.
Lily clung to her dress.
Ethan approached.
“Are you hurt?”
Elena nodded.
“I'm okay.”
Then Lily looked at Ethan.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Daddy...”
Ethan stopped breathing.
The word wasn't accidental this time.
It came from a frightened child seeking safety.
He turned toward Elena.
“Tell me.”
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“She is your daughter.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at Lily.
Then at Elena.
“No.”
Elena pulled the old ring from her neck.
“You gave me this.”
Ethan recognized it immediately.
His face changed.
“I thought you lost that.”
“I never lost it.”
She reached into her bag and removed an old photograph.
It showed Ethan and Elena standing together seven years earlier.
Ethan remembered that day.
The photograph had been taken shortly before everything went wrong.
His hands began to tremble.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I tried.”
Elena's voice broke.
“Your wife made sure you never received my letters.”
Victoria shouted.
“She is lying!”
Ethan turned.
“Enough.”
Victoria's eyes filled with desperation.
“She wants your money.”
“If she wanted my money, why did she disappear for seven years?”
Victoria had no answer.
Elena continued.
“You were told I left you.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I believed it.”
“I was told you wanted nothing to do with me.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
She looked at Victoria.
“She made sure we both believed the other had walked away.”
Ethan's eyes filled with anger.
“Did you forge medical records?”
Victoria became silent.
“Victoria.”
Still nothing.
“Answer me.”
“I did what I had to do.”
The admission fell into the room like a bomb.
Ethan stared at her.
“You destroyed my relationship with my daughter.”
“I protected our marriage!”
“No.”
His voice was quiet now.
“You protected yourself.”
Victoria began crying.
But Ethan didn't move toward her.
He walked to Lily.
He knelt.
“Lily.”
The girl looked at him cautiously.
“I don't know how to be your father yet.”
She sniffed.
“But I want to learn.”
Lily slowly reached for his hand.
Ethan took it.
The tiny hand disappeared inside his.
Something broke inside him.
Seven birthdays.
Seven Christmas mornings.
Seven years of first words, first steps, scraped knees, school plays.
He had missed everything.
He looked at Elena.
“I am so sorry.”
Elena cried silently.
Then police sirens sounded outside.
Victoria's eyes widened.
“You called them?”
Ethan didn't answer.
May you like
He simply stood beside Elena and Lily.
For the first time in seven years, they were standing on the same side.
