Chapter 6 - THE FILE IN THE SAFE The following morning, Ethan's attorney arrived.

Daniel Brooks had represented the Vance family for fifteen years.
He listened carefully as Elena explained what had happened.
Then Ethan showed him the old medical records.
Daniel studied them.
“These aren't ordinary documents.”
“What do you mean?”
“They contain signatures from doctors who were not practicing at the time these papers were supposedly issued.”
Ethan stared.
“So they're fake.”
Daniel nodded.
“Likely.”
Elena's breathing quickened.
“Victoria said she paid doctors.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“If she used the family trust to conceal medical evidence, there may be financial records.”
Ethan immediately remembered something.
“The private safe.”
Victoria had always controlled it.
But the safe was in Ethan's office.
They opened it.
Inside were investment documents, property deeds, and several envelopes.
One envelope had Elena's name on it.
Her hands trembled.
Inside were copies of letters.
Letters she had written to Ethan seven years earlier.
Every one of them had been intercepted.
Every one had been marked with a date.
Ethan read one.
His eyes filled with tears.
Elena had written:
I am pregnant. I don't know where you are. Please come find us.
Ethan lowered the paper.
“You wrote this?”
“Yes.”
“I never saw it.”
“I know.”
There were twelve letters.
Twelve attempts.
Twelve stolen chances.
Then Daniel found something else.
A bank transfer.
A payment to a private medical consultant.
Three days after Elena gave birth.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“She paid them.”
Daniel nodded.
“We need the original banking records.”
Ethan looked at Elena.
“I will prove everything.”
Elena touched his arm.
“I don't need revenge.”
“I know.”
“But Lily deserves the truth.”
May you like
“And she will have it.”
For the first time, Elena allowed herself to believe him.
