Chapter 1 - THE SILENT SHADOW Morning sunlight poured through the enormous windows of the Mercer estate, turning the polished marble floors into sheets of gold.

Yet the mansion felt strangely cold.
Maria had worked there for three years, long enough to understand that a beautiful house could still hide ugly secrets.
She entered the formal dining room carrying a silver tray of coffee. At the head of the dark oak table sat Ethan Mercer, a powerful businessman whose name appeared regularly in financial magazines.
Beside him sat his infant son, Leo.
The baby laughed softly while playing with a plastic rattle.
Ethan smiled.
"Good morning, Maria. Thank you."
"You're welcome, Mr. Mercer."
For one brief moment, the room felt warm.
Then Victoria entered.
Her emerald-green silk dress shimmered beneath the chandelier. Her heels struck the marble floor with sharp, deliberate clicks.
She didn't smile at Leo.
She didn't even acknowledge Maria.
"Ethan," she said, "we need to discuss the charity gala budget."
"I'm reviewing Leo's trust documents."
Victoria stopped.
Her eyes moved toward the baby.
Something dark crossed her face.
"You spend far too much time worrying about that child."
Ethan looked up.
"He's my son."
"And he's going to inherit everything."

Silence.
Maria lowered her eyes, pretending not to listen.
Victoria leaned closer.
"I want access to the master safe."
"No."
Her expression hardened.
"You're my husband."
"And Leo is my responsibility."
Ethan kissed his son's forehead before leaving for work.
As the front doors closed behind him, Victoria remained standing in the hallway.
She watched the car disappear through the gates.
Then she whispered to herself.
"That child will never inherit this estate."
Maria froze in the kitchen doorway.
For the first time, she realized something.
May you like
Victoria wasn't simply jealous.
She was planning something.
