Chapter 7 - HIS MOTHER'S LETTER The next morning, Ethan drove to his attorney's office.
Maria stayed home with Leo.
The attorney handed Ethan a sealed envelope.
His wife's handwriting was unmistakable.
Ethan's hands trembled.
He opened it.
Inside was a short letter.
She had written:
"Ethan, if you're reading this before Leo is grown, something has gone terribly wrong."
His heart stopped.
She continued:
"There is someone close to our family whom I never trusted."
Ethan read the sentence again.
Then again.
The letter didn't name Victoria.
It couldn't.
But it contained another warning.
"Protect Leo from anyone who wants his inheritance more than they want him."
Ethan closed his eyes.
His wife's final words suddenly felt like a voice from the past.
Then the attorney handed him another document.
A handwritten list.
Three names were on it.
One was Victoria.
One was an old family employee.
