Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Sterling penthouse, casting warm amber light across the hardwood floors. For the first time in months, the air inside felt light, free of the suffocation that Victoria’s presence had always brought. Lily sat on the plush carpet, her small hands diligently painting a sprawling green tree on a sketch pad. Beside her, Maya watched with a gentle, protective smile, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the rim of her coffee mug.
Yet beneath the calm surface, Ethan knew the battle was far from over.
Standing in his private study, Ethan stared down at a thick leather-bound folder delivered by his chief of security, Marcus. While Victoria Vance was sitting in a holding cell awaiting her preliminary trial, her wealthy family was already mobilizing a legion of high-powered attorneys. Worse, Julian Drake’s shadow network was deep, reaching into the corrupt underbelly of the city's financial sector.
"She hasn't said a word to the press, boss," Marcus said, standing at attention near the mahogany desk. "Victoria’s legal team is pushing for a psychiatric evaluation to avoid prison time. They're going to paint her as unstable, claiming the video was taken out of context or fabricated using modern artificial intelligence."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slivers of flint. "The video is forensic-certified. Every frame was verified by federal investigators. They can try whatever circus tricks they want, Marcus. I will buy out every courtroom in this state before I let that monster walk free."
"There’s something else," Marcus added, his voice dropping an octave as he slid a secondary file across the mahogany surface. "We ran a deep background check on Miss Maya, as you requested—not out of suspicion, but for her protection. Julian Drake’s associates have been making inquiries about her past."
Ethan immediately froze, his posture straightening. "What kind of inquiries?"
"Her maiden name is Maya Lin. Her father was Dr. Arthur Lin, the former chief research engineer for Drake Global Dynamics twelve years ago."
Ethan felt a sudden cold chill run down his spine. Drake Global Dynamics was the parent firm Julian’s father had run before Julian took over the subsidiary. "Arthur Lin... the engineer who died in that industrial plant explosion back in 2014?"
"The very same," Marcus confirmed grimly. "The official police report ruled it negligence on Dr. Lin's part. But our internal sources suggest Dr. Lin was about to blow the whistle on Drake Global for systemic structural sabotage and insurance fraud. Shortly after his death, Maya’s family was financially wiped out by legal fees, leaving her penniless, forced into domestic work just to survive."
Ethan’s chest tightened with a profound mixture of shock and anger. Maya wasn't just an innocent woman who happened to walk into his life—she was the surviving victim of the very empire he was currently fighting. Julian Drake had not only ruined her father’s legacy, but his corporate greed had stripped Maya of her youth, forcing her into a life of servitude.
Downstairs, the quiet harmony was suddenly broken by the harsh chime of the front door intercom. Maya set her mug down, glancing nervously toward the foyer. Since the press conference, she had been on edge whenever the quiet routine was disturbed.
Ethan stepped out of his study, sweeping down the grand staircase before the household staff could answer. "Stay with Lily, Maya," he said softly, his voice instantly instilling a wave of calm over her.
Ethan approached the security panel and activated the video feed. Standing at the penthouse elevator threshold were two men in dark tailored suits, flanked by a tall, silver-haired man carrying an ivory-handled walking cane. Ethan’s jaw set hard as he recognized the figure: Charles Vance, Victoria’s ruthless multi-billionaire father.
Ethan pressed the intercom button. "You are trespassing, Charles."
"Open the door, Ethan," Charles Vance’s icy voice boomed through the speaker, carrying the weight of four decades of unimpeachable power. "We are going to settle this like gentlemen before I destroy everything your father built."
Ethan didn't hesitate. He unlocked the heavy double doors and stepped into the threshold, blocking the entry entirely with his broad frame. "You have two minutes before my security team physically throws you off my floor."
Charles Vance sneered, his cold gray eyes locked onto Ethan. "You put my daughter behind bars over a maid’s lies and a doctored video clip, Sterling. You’ve humiliated my family name across national television. Do you honestly think your pathetic corporate empire can survive the full weight of Vance Capital?"
"Your daughter physically abused a four-year-old child," Ethan replied, his voice deadly quiet, vibrating with absolute disdain. "She belonged in an asylum, but she will rot in a federal cell instead. If you take one step closer to my family, Charles, I will release the offshore transaction records connecting Vance Capital to Julian Drake’s money laundering scheme."
Charles’s arrogant smile wavered slightly, a flicker of hesitation crossing his weathered face. "You're bluffing."
"Try me," Ethan challenged, stepping directly up to the older man. "Walk away, Charles. Or I promise you, by closing bell today, Vance Capital will be under federal audit."
May you like
Charles glared at Ethan, his breathing heavy with rage. He raised his cane, pointing it at Ethan’s chest. "This isn't over, Sterling. You think that maid is your angel? Ask her where she was twelve years ago. Ask her what her father did to my firm."
Before Ethan could answer, Charles turned on his heel and strode back into the elevator, his bodyguards following closely behind. As the doors slid shut, Ethan remained in the hallway, his heart heavy. The web of deceit was expanding, pulling Maya deeper into the crosshairs of enemies far more dangerous than Victoria.
