Chapter 6: The Siege of Sterling Tower

Chapter 6: The Siege of Sterling Tower

Ethan moved with quiet, practiced precision through the dark hallway, his hand firmly gripping Maya’s. His military background from his early years before taking over Sterling Enterprises came back to him instantly. He guided Maya into Lily’s bedroom, closing the heavy oak door quietly behind them.
Lily was stirring in her bed, her small voice terrified in the dark. "Daddy? Maya?"
"Shh, sweetie, I'm right here," Maya whispered, rushing to the bedside and lifting the little girl into her arms. Lily wrapped her small legs tightly around Maya’s waist, hiding her face in Maya’s neck. "Is the bad lady back?"
"No, darling," Maya murmured softly, stroking her hair. "Daddy is going to protect us. Everything is okay."
Ethan moved to the master closet, opening a hidden electronic safe equipped with a mechanical override key. He pulled out a sleek black tactical sidearm, checking the magazine before racking the slide with a metallic clack. He turned back to Maya, his eyes glowing with fierce determination in the pale moonlight filtering through the window blinds.
"Stay in this room," Ethan ordered quietly. "Lock the heavy deadbolt from the inside. Do not open this door for anyone unless you hear my voice."
"Ethan, no!" Maya pleaded, her eyes wide with terror as she reached out to grab his sleeve. "Don't go out there alone! Julian is desperate—he might have armed men with him!"
Ethan placed his hand over hers, leaning down to press a firm, passionate kiss to her lips—a sudden, electric kiss that carried years of unspoken emotion and raw promise. Maya gasped into the kiss, her soul burning with love for the man standing before her.
When he pulled back, his eyes were burning with cold fire. "I survived four years of grief without a soul, Maya. I finally found a reason to live again, and I am not letting anyone take my family away from me. Lock the door."
Before Maya could argue, Ethan stepped out into the dark corridor, and the heavy bolt clicked shut behind him.
Out in the expansive main living room, the terrace glass doors shattered into thousands of cascading pieces. Three dark figures clad in tactical gear stepped through the debris, their suppressed weapon lasers cutting through the darkness. Leading them was Julian Drake, his face pale, eyes hollow and frantic, holding a silver handgun.
"Sterling!" Julian’s voice echoed manic and twisted across the marble space. "Come out, come out, Ethan! You took my money! You took my company! You destroyed my life for a worthless maid!"
Ethan moved like a shadow behind the massive marble kitchen island. "You destroyed your own life, Julian," Ethan’s voice echoed from the shadows, impossible to pinpoint due to the room's acoustics. "You stole from innocent families, murdered Dr. Arthur Lin, and abused my daughter. Your legacy is dead."
"My father built this city!" Julian screamed, firing a wild round into the ceiling, sending plaster raining down. "I am going to execute you in front of that maid, and then I am going to burn this entire penthouse to the ground!"
"You're welcome to try," Ethan replied coldly.
Suddenly, a tactical flashbang grenade bounced across the marble floor from the private elevator foyer.
BOOM!
A blinding flash of light and a deafening roar erupted through the room. Marcus and four heavily armed Sterling security guards burst through the front entrance, weapons raised. "Federal Security! Drop your weapons!"
Gunfire erupted in the darkness. Julian’s hired mercenaries fired back wildly, retreating toward the broken balcony. Ethan vaulted over the island, firing two precise shots that neutralized the closest gunman. Marcus tackled the second mercenary, disarming him instantly.
Julian, panicked and bleeding from glass shrapnel, sprinted down the private wing toward Lily’s nursery door. "If I go down, I'm taking her with me!" he shrieked, raising his weapon toward the locked door.
"JULIAN!" Ethan roared.
Ethan closed the distance with terrifying speed, tackling Julian into the wall before Julian could pull the trigger. The gun flew out of Julian’s hand, skidding across the hardwood. Ethan slammed Julian onto the floor, his forearm pinned firmly against Julian’s throat, his eyes filled with lethal fury.
"Touch my family again," Ethan snarled, his voice dropping into a deathly whisper as he pressed the barrel of his sidearm directly against Julian’s forehead, "and I will personally ensure you never draw breath again."
Julian gagged, choking on his own terror, his eyes wide with the realization that Ethan Sterling was entirely prepared to put an end to him. "Don't... please... Ethan..."
Federal agents swarmed down the hallway seconds later, weapons drawn. "Drop the weapon, Mr. Sterling! We have him!"
Ethan held his position for three agonizing seconds, his heart pounding like a war drum, before slowly lowering his weapon and stepping back. The federal officers tackled Julian, pinning him to the floor and snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

The room fell quiet save for the heavy breathing of the officers. Ethan turned toward the nursery door. "Maya! It's safe! Open the door!"
The heavy lock turned, and the door swung open. Maya stood there, trembling, holding Lily close. As soon as she saw Ethan unharmed, she let out a sob, running forward and throwing her arms around his neck. Ethan caught her, lifting her off her feet, burying his face in her hair as Lily wrapped her tiny arms around both of them.
