Chapter 10: Echoes of Justice

One year after the trial, the final legal appeals filed by the Vance family were permanently dismissed by the Supreme Court. Charles Vance was forced into full corporate retirement, his remaining assets liquidated to pay restitution to the families damaged by his financial schemes.

During a routine visit to the federal courthouse to finalize the foundation’s legal grants, Maya unexpectedly crossed paths with Victoria Vance in the high-security visitor corridor. Victoria was wearing a plain orange jumpsuit, her once immaculate hair dull, her eyes sunken and hollow, escorted by two armed federal guards.

Victoria stopped, staring at Maya through the reinforced glass barrier. The manic rage that had once defined her was gone, replaced by total, pathetic defeat. She looked at Maya’s elegant attire, the flashing diamond wedding ring on her finger, and the posture of absolute confidence that Maya now possessed.

Maya stopped, looking back at the woman who had once tried to destroy her life and abuse little Lily. There was no hatred in Maya’s eyes—only quiet, profound pity.

"You won," Victoria rasped through the intercom grille, her voice trembling. "You took everything that was supposed to be mine."

Maya looked at her calmly, her voice gentle yet unyielding. "I didn't take anything from you, Victoria. You destroyed yourself because you believed that power gave you the right to hurt the helpless. I only fought to protect a child who needed love."

Victoria dropped her gaze, unable to meet Maya’s clear, pure eyes. The guards led her away down the dim corridor, her footsteps fading into silence.

Maya walked out of the courthouse into the bright sunshine, where Ethan was waiting for her beside their private vehicle, holding open the door. He took her hand, pulling her close. "Are you alright, my love?"

Maya smiled, looking up at the clear blue sky, feeling a complete sense of closure washing over her heart. "I am more than alright, Ethan. I am free."
