Chapter 4: The Boardroom Siege

Chapter 4: The Boardroom Siege

The storm clouds gathered rapidly over the city skyline by mid-week. Inside the executive boardroom of Sterling Enterprises, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Twelve board members sat around the massive glass conference table, their expressions grim as they looked through financial reports and tabloid headlines.

At the head of the table, Ethan sat in his tailored charcoal suit, his presence imposing despite the onslaught of corporate pressure. To his right sat Maya, dressed in an elegant cream-colored blazer and slacks, looking every bit the refined woman she truly was. Beside them sat Arthur Vance's proxy on the board, Senator Thomas Wright, a man whose loyalty had been bought decades ago.

"This is unacceptable, Mr. Sterling," Senator Wright declared, slamming a newspaper onto the glass table. The front page featured a blurry photo of Maya entering Ethan’s penthouse with the headline: THE MAID WHO STOLE AN EMPIRE. "Our stock price has plunged eight percent in three days. The public views this company as a playground for personal drama and illicit domestic affairs!"

Ethan didn't flinch. "The stock plunged because Charles Vance leaked false stories to short our shares. And as for Miss Lin, she is currently serving as special advisor to the Sterling Foundation’s child advocacy wing. Her presence here is non-negotiable."

"She is a liability!" Wright shouted, standing up and pointing an accusing finger at Maya. "She is the daughter of Arthur Lin, a convicted corporate saboteur! She infiltrated your home to seek revenge against the Vance and Drake families, and you played right into her hands!"

Maya felt a sharp pang in her chest, her hands trembling beneath the table. Memories of her father’s tragic death and the media smear campaign that followed surged through her mind. But before she could sink into shame, she felt Ethan’s strong, warm hand cover hers beneath the glass table. The solid warmth grounded her instantly.

"Sit down, Senator," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal register that silenced the entire room. "You will not slander an innocent man or his daughter in my boardroom."

"I am calling for an emergency vote of no confidence," Wright sneered, looking around at the other board members. "Ethan Sterling is emotionally compromised. He has turned a personal vendetta into corporate suicide. If we do not remove him as CEO today, Vance Capital will execute a hostile takeover!"

A heavy silence fell over the room. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats, whispering amongst themselves. Ethan watched them calmly, his expression unreadable. He had anticipated this move days ago.

"Are you finished, Wright?" Ethan asked smoothly.

"The board will vote now," Wright demanded, triumph gleaming in his eyes.

Ethan slowly reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek silver tablet. He tapped the screen and slid it to the center of the table. "Before any vote is cast, I suggest you all look at the corporate restructuring plan filed this morning with the Securities and Exchange Commission."

Wright frowned, picking up the tablet. As he scrolled through the documents, the color drained entirely from his face. "What... what is this?"

"That," Ethan explained calmly, "is the buyout acquisition of forty-two percent of Vance Capital’s floating debt, executed two hours ago by Sterling Enterprises in partnership with the International Lin Estate Fund."

Maya’s eyes widened in shock as she turned to Ethan. The Lin Estate Fund?

"Arthur Lin’s patents for industrial safety technology were never destroyed," Ethan announced, looking directly at the stunned board members. "They were stolen by Julian Drake and hidden in offshore shells. Last night, federal prosecutors recovered those patents and reinstated the Lin estate as the rightful owner. Miss Maya Lin is now the sole heiress to a three-hundred-million-dollar tech portfolio."

The room erupted into quiet gasps. The board members who had been hesitating suddenly sat up straight, eyeing Maya with newfound respect and awe.

"Which means," Ethan continued, standing up and towering over Senator Wright, "Miss Lin now holds controlling interest in the debt notes of Vance Capital. If Charles Vance attempts a hostile takeover, Maya can liquidate his assets by noon tomorrow."

Wright collapsed back into his chair, sweating profusely, unable to utter a single word.

Ethan turned to face the entire board, his voice ringing with absolute dominance. "This meeting is adjourned. And anyone who questions Maya Lin’s integrity again will find their board seats revoked by sunset."

As the board members quickly gathered their papers and scurried out of the room like scolded children, Maya sat frozen, tears shimmering in her eyes. She looked up at Ethan, her voice barely a whisper. "Ethan... you recovered my father’s patents?"

Ethan stepped closer, leaning down to meet her eye level, his gaze filled with profound tenderness. "Your father was a good man, Maya. He spent his life protecting others. It was time someone protected his legacy... and his daughter."
