Chapter 11: Whispers of New Life
Spring arrived at the Sterling Estate, bringing a sea of blooming jasmine and lavender that perfumed the crisp morning air. The estate was filled with the happy sound of Lily playing with a new golden retriever puppy in the vast backyard.
Inside the sunlit master bedroom, Maya sat on the edge of the bed, holding a small electronic device in her trembling hands. Two distinct pink lines showed clearly on the digital display.
The bathroom door opened, and Ethan stepped out, drying his hair with a towel. He stopped instantly when he saw Maya’s tear-filled eyes and the radiant, overwhelming joy illuminating her face.
"Maya? What is it?" Ethan asked, panic instantly lacing his voice as he rushed over and knelt before her. "Are you feeling ill?"
Maya laughed softly through her tears, reaching out to take his hands and placing them gently over her abdomen. "I'm not ill, Ethan. We're going to have a baby."
Ethan froze, his breath catching in his throat. He looked down at his hands resting against her stomach, then back up into Maya’s glowing eyes. A look of such pure, unadulterated happiness swept across his face that he looked like a young man without a single care in the world.
"A baby?" Ethan choked out, his voice cracking with emotion.
"A baby," Maya confirmed, nodding happily.
Ethan gathered her into his arms, lifting her off the bed and holding her against his heart as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe. He kissed her face, her eyes, her lips, murmuring endless words of love and devotion against her skin.
Later that evening, the family sat around the grand fireplace in the living room. Lily sat on Ethan’s lap, looking curiously at a tiny pair of knitted baby booties that Maya had placed on the coffee table.
"Are these for my puppy?" Lily asked innocently, holding up the small booties.
Maya smiled softly, sitting beside Ethan and placing her hand over his. "No, sweetie. Those are for your new baby brother or sister."

Lily’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "A baby? I'm going to be a big sister?!"
"The best big sister in the world," Ethan declared, pulling both of his favorite girls into a massive family hug. Lily cheered loudly, hugging Maya’s waist, whispering soft gentle hellos to Maya’s belly.
