Chapter 13: A Sanctuary of Colors

At the center of the main exhibition room hung a massive, six-foot canvas that drew every visitor to a complete standstill.
The painting, titled The Unbreakable Crown, was a collaborative masterpiece created by Lily and Claire over three months. It depicted a dark, stormy ocean crashing against jagged black rocks, but rising from the center of the dark waves was a brilliant, glowing lighthouse shaped like a delicate white flower crown. The golden light spilling from the crown illuminated dozens of colorful boats sailing safely toward a warm, welcoming shore.
Beside the canvas stood Lily. She was eight years old now, taller, her blonde hair catching the afternoon sunlight, her brown eyes bright with confidence and total, unburdened joy.
Her wrist bore no scars—only a delicate silver bracelet gifted to her by Gabriel on her eighth birthday, engraved with the words: Brave & Beloved.
A group of younger children gathered around Lily as she sat on a small wooden stool, holding a palette of bright watercolors.
"Lily," a little girl with pigtails asked timidly, "how do you fix a picture if you accidentally make a dark smear on the paper?"
Lily looked up, giving the little girl a warm, sweet smile that looked so much like Ethan’s it made Claire’s heart sing.
"You don't throw the paper away," Lily explained gently, dipping her brush into a pot of bright, sunny yellow. "You just paint a sun right over the dark spot. The dark paint makes the yellow shine even brighter."
Standing nearby, Claire felt tears of profound gratitude fill her eyes. She felt Gabriel’s arm wrap tenderly around her waist, pulling her close against his side.

"She’s extraordinary, Claire," Gabriel whispered, watching Lily teach the younger kids.
"She’s free, Gabriel," Claire corrected softly, leaning into his warmth. "That’s all I ever wanted for her. To be free."
