Chapter 4: The Ghost of Ethan Harrow

Chapter 4: The Ghost of Ethan Harrow

Inside Claire’s cozy, sunlit kitchen, the aroma of fresh coffee struggled against the cold reality of the documents spread across the wooden table. In the living room, Lily sat quietly on the sofa, clutching her favorite plush rabbit and drawing sunny landscapes with colored pencils, her bandaged wrist resting gently on a throw pillow.

Gabriel poured two mugs of black coffee and set one in front of Claire.

"Tell me everything about last night," Gabriel said softly, leaning back against the counter. "Every detail, Claire. Don't leave anything out."

Claire took a slow sip, letting the warmth penetrate her chilled fingers. "Evelyn was announcing the new Harrow Foundation Trust at the gala. She had set up this elaborate presentation with gold chairs and white silk crowns. Lily... she just wanted to give Evelyn the crown she had spent three days making. She thought... she thought if she made something pretty, her grandmother might finally love her."

Claire’s voice broke on the last word, and she paused, swallowing hard to regain her composure.

"Evelyn grabbed her," Claire continued, her voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "She didn't just push her away, Gabriel. She twisted Lily's wrist until the wire bent. She destroyed the crown right in front of her. When I saw Lily crying... something inside me broke. Eleven years of fear, eleven years of holding my tongue while Evelyn dragged Ethan’s memory through the mud... it all came out in one second."

Gabriel listened silently, his dark jaw clenched tight. "And Julian?"

"Julian was terrified," Claire said with a bitter laugh. "He knelt by his mother on the floor, asking if she could move her fingers, but he looked at me like he was begging me to stop the world from spinning. He’s forty years old, Gabriel, and he’s still just a scared boy living in Evelyn’s shadow."

Gabriel walked over to his briefcase, unlocked the silver brass latches, and pulled out a thick, weathered leather binder. The cover was stained with age, its gold-embossed initials faded: E.H.

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. "Is that... Ethan’s journal?"

"Ethan gave this to me three days before the car crash," Gabriel said quietly, laying his hands flat over the leather. "He knew his mother was tampering with his estate planning. Ethan was preparing to leave the Harrow corporate empire entirely. He had set up a secret irrevocable trust in Lily’s name—funded by his personal royalties from his architectural patents—so that you and Lily would never be dependent on Evelyn’s mercy."

Claire stared at the journal, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "When Ethan died... Evelyn told me there was nothing. She showed me a will that left everything to Julian and the foundation. She said if I tried to fight it, she would use her lawyers to declare me an unfit mother and take Lily forever."

"That will was a forgery," Gabriel declared, his eyes flashing with a sharp, lethal intensity. "Evelyn suppressed Ethan's real trust because it gave you full legal control over thirty percent of the Harrow Holding Group’s voting shares. You aren't just Ethan’s widow, Claire. You and Lily are the majority stockholders of the very building Evelyn stands in."

The room fell into a stunned silence. The ticking of the wall clock sounded like thunder.

"She didn't just want to hide Lily from high society," Claire realized, her hand rising to her heart as the full scope of the truth washed over her. "She wanted to destroy us so we would never find out what belonged to my daughter."
