Chapter 8: The Final Stand for Custody

Claire’s prediction came true less than twenty-four hours later.
cornered by the overwhelming public disgrace, Evelyn Harrow launched her most desperate and vicious attack yet. Utilizing a web of old political favors, her high-priced legal team circumvented standard family court protocols to secure an emergency ex parte hearing before Judge Harold Vance (no relation to Gabriel)—a judge whose judicial campaign had been heavily funded by the Harrow Trust for over two decades.
The petition alleged that Claire Vance was an emotionally unstable, violent parent who had intentionally orchestrated the gala incident to extort money from the Harrow family, placing child Lily in severe psychological and physical danger.
The order demanded the immediate, temporary removal of Lily from Claire’s custody, pending a psychiatric evaluation of the mother.
When Gabriel read the court order delivered to Claire’s home on Thursday morning, his face turned to thunder.
"This is an illegal abuse of judicial discretion," Gabriel hissed, slamming the paper onto the table. "Judge Vance didn't even schedule a preliminary evidentiary hearing! He signed this order based solely on Evelyn’s sworn affidavit!"
Claire felt her vision narrow, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "They are coming to take my daughter?"
"Not while I am breathing," Gabriel promised, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal determination. "We have two hours before the sheriff’s department is required to execute the court order. We are going straight to the County District Court to file an emergency writ of prohibition with Presiding Judge Elena Martinez."
"Will she hear us in time?" Claire begged, her hands clutching Gabriel’s coat sleeve.
"Judge Martinez is one of the few judges in this state who cannot be bought by Harrow money," Gabriel said fiercely. "And we aren't going in there with just empty arguments, Claire. We are bringing Julian’s drive, Ethan’s real trust documents, and the forensic medical reports."
Claire ran to the living room, where Lily was sitting on the rug, carefully placing her colored pencils in a neat row. Claire dropped to her knees, pulling Lily into her arms and holding her so tightly she could feel the child's steady, sweet heartbeat against her own.

"Mommy?" Lily whispered, sensing the overwhelming tension in the air. "Are we going on another ride?"
"Yes, baby," Claire said, kissing her cheek, her tears wetting Lily's soft hair. "We are going to tell the world the truth today. And no one... no one is ever going to take you away from me."
