Chapter 6: The Whispering Witness

Chapter 6: The Whispering Witness

The sun was dipping low over the park, casting long, amber shadows across the grass, when a dark luxury sedan pulled quietly to the curb two blocks away.
Claire noticed it immediately. The car remained idling, its tinted windows rolled up tightly.
She handed her paintbrushes to Vanessa, her loyal studio assistant, and walked slowly toward the car. As she approached, the rear passenger window slid down halfway, revealing Julian Harrow.
He looked terrible. Dark circles shadowed his pale blue eyes, and his tailored collar seemed too loose around his neck. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in a week.
"Claire," Julian said, his voice raspy and barely audible over the purr of the engine. "Don't come closer. My mother has private investigators following both of us."
Claire stopped five feet from the window, her arms crossed over her chest. "Then why are you here, Julian? Come to deliver another warning?"
Julian looked away, staring down at his hands clasped tightly in his lap. "Mother... Mother is out of control. She spent four hours yesterday screaming at her attorneys because the local news station refused to run her press release calling you a dangerous lunatic."
"She broke my daughter’s wrist, Julian," Claire said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "Where were you when your mother was crushing Lily’s arm? You sat there and watched."
Julian flinched as if Claire had struck him. "I know! God help me, Claire, I know! I’ve been sitting in that house watching her destroy everything my brother loved for eleven years!" He slammed his fist against the leather seat, his eyes brimming with tears of shame. "Ethan was the brave one. Ethan stood up to her, and look what happened to him."
Claire’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Julian looked around frantically before reaching into his coat pocket. He produced a small, silver USB flash drive and held it out through the narrow opening of the window.
"Ethan’s car accident eleven years ago," Julian whispered, his hands trembling violently. "It wasn't an accident, Claire. Ethan was driving to the state capital to file a formal corporate fraud complaint against Mother and the board. Two hours before he drove off that mountain road, Mother had his company car serviced by her private estate mechanic to 'fix a brake sensor.'"
Claire felt the ground beneath her feet tilt. A wave of cold horror washed over her skin. "She... she sabotaged Ethan's car?"
"I don't have proof of the sabotage itself—the mechanic died five years ago," Julian sobbed quietly. "But on this drive are the original, unedited maintenance logs from the estate registry that Mother tried to burn. It proves she knew the brakes were compromised before she let Ethan drive down that mountain."
Claire stared at the small silver drive, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Take it," Julian begged, extending his arm further. "Take it to Gabriel. Protect Lily. Mother is planning to file an emergency custody petition tomorrow morning claiming you are an unfit parent. She’s bribing a family court judge, Claire. You have to fight her with everything Ethan left behind."
Claire reached out and took the cold metal drive from his hand. "Why are you giving me this now, Julian?"

Julian looked at her with a broken, sorrowful expression. "Because last night, Serena packed her bags and took our children to her parents' house in Boston. She told me if I stayed with my mother, I would lose my soul forever. I’ve already lost my brother, Claire. I won't let my mother destroy Ethan's child too."
Without another word, the window rolled up, and the dark sedan accelerated into the gathering evening shadows.
