Chapter 11: Dawn of Healing

Chapter 11: Dawn of Healing

Three days later, the quiet room on the top floor of Saint Jude’s Private Hospital was filled with the soft, steady rhythmic beep of a heart monitor. Sunlight streamed through the large windows, washing away the memory of the storm.
Ethan sat in the chair beside the bed, his suit jacket discarded, his eyes dark with exhaustion. He hadn't slept or left her side for seventy-two hours. He held Maya’s pale hand tightly between both of his, kissing her knuckles repeatedly. Lily lay asleep on the small sofa in the corner, holding a handmade 'Get Well Soon' card.
Slowly, the long dark lashes on Maya’s face fluttered. She let out a soft groan as light flooded her senses.
Ethan instantly stood up, his heart pounding in his chest. "Maya? Maya, can you hear me?"
Maya turned her head slowly, her eyes adjusting to the bright room until they landed on Ethan’s tired, handsome face. "Ethan..." she rasped softly, her throat dry.
Ethan fell to his knees beside her bed, burying his face in her hand, tears of sheer relief wetting her skin. "Thank God... thank God you came back to us."
Maya reached over with her other hand, running her fingers gently through his messy dark hair. "I promised I wouldn't leave you, Ethan."
Lily woke up at the sound of their voices and gasped. "Maya!" She scrambled off the sofa and ran to the bedside, carefully hugging Maya’s uninjured side. "You woke up! I was so scared!"
Maya smiled, kissing Lily’s cheek warmly. "I'm here, sweetie. I'm not going anywhere."
Over the next two weeks, justice was delivered swiftly and completely. Arthur Vance, Victoria Vance, Carter Vance, and Harrison were all convicted on federal charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, extortion, and corporate fraud, receiving sentences that guaranteed they would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars.
Vance Global was officially dissolved, its massive assets and patents legally transferred to Maya. Overnight, the former maid became one of the most powerful and wealthy philanthropists in the nation.
On her final day in the hospital, Ethan stood by the window as Maya got dressed in a soft lavender dress. He walked over to her, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket.
Maya turned, her breath catching as Ethan slowly dropped to one knee before her.
"Maya Lin," Ethan said, his deep voice thick with profound emotion, looking up into her eyes with pure love. "You came into our lives when we were broken, and you became our unbroken shield. You taught me how to love again, and you gave my daughter a mother. I don't want to spend another second of my life without you. Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"
May you like
Lily ran over, holding up a sparkling ring from the box. "Say yes, Maya! Say yes!"
Tears of pure joy overflowed from Maya’s eyes. She sank down and wrapped her arms around Ethan’s neck, kissing him deeply. "Yes! A thousand times yes, Ethan!"
