Chapter 10: The Ultimate Sacrifice
The deafening report of the gun shattered the room.
Maya collapsed onto the cold stone floor, a dark crimson stain rapidly spreading across the shoulder of her white coat. She had successfully shielded Lily, taking the bullet meant for the little girl.
"MAYA!" Ethan screamed, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony tearing from his throat.
With a roar that shook the very foundations of the estate, Ethan charged Arthur Vance before the old man could realign his weapon. Ethan slammed into Vance with brutal force, knocking the revolver from his grip. In a display of terrifying power, Ethan disarmed Harrison with a single sweep, pinning Arthur to the stone floor by his throat, his dark eyes burning with lethal fury.
"Daddy! Daddy!" Lily sobbed, squirming free from her ropes and throwing herself toward Maya.
Before Ethan could crush Arthur’s windpipe, federal tactical SWAT officers, led by Agent Ramirez, breached the windows and rear doors, weapons raised.
"Drop your weapons! Hands in the air!" the officers shouted, instantly securing Harrison and dragging a defeated, bloodied Arthur Vance to his feet.
Ethan released Vance and threw himself down beside Maya, pulling her limp, bleeding body into his arms. Rain poured through the broken doors, mixing with the pool of blood on the floor.
"Maya! Maya, look at me! Stay with me!" Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking with tears as he pressed his hand hard against her chest wound to stop the bleeding.
Maya’s eyes fluttered open slowly, her breathing shallow and ragged. She reached up with a weak, trembling hand, her fingers gently touching Ethan’s wet cheek.
"Is... is Lily safe?" Maya whispered softly, her blood-stained lips forming a faint, tender smile.
"She’s safe! You saved her again!" Ethan sobbed openly, pulling her head against his chest. "Hold on, Maya! Please, God, hold on! Don't leave me!"
Lily knelt beside them, her tiny hands clutching Maya’s blood-soaked sleeve, crying hysterically. "Maya! Don't sleep! Please don't sleep! I love you, Mommy!"

Hearing the word 'Mommy' escape Lily’s lips, Maya’s eyes filled with soft, radiant tears. "I love you too, my sweet girl..." Maya breathed softly, before her eyes closed and her hand fell limply into Ethan’s lap.
"AMBULANCE! GET AN AMBULANCE NOW!" Ethan roared to the heavens, his desperate voice echoing into the dark, stormy night.
