Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

The morning light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, painting the marble floors in shades of liquid gold. For the first time in four years, the air inside the Sterling residence felt light, devoid of the suffocating tension that had once lingered in every corner. Lily’s soft giggles echoed from the playroom down the hall, where she sat surrounded by watercolor paints and sketchbooks, her delicate hands brushing vibrant colors across the paper.
Ethan stood at the kitchen island, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored charcoal suit. His eyes drifted toward Maya, who was carefully preparing breakfast. She wore a simple cream-colored silk blouse and grey trousers—an outfit Ethan had personally selected for her after declaring her a full partner in his household. Yet, despite her elevated position and the public triumph of three months prior, Maya still moved with a quiet, careful grace, as if expecting the floor beneath her to collapse at any second.
"You don't have to cook, Maya," Ethan said gently, his voice carrying a warmth reserved only for her and his daughter. "We have a full culinary staff now."
Maya looked up, offering a faint, breathtaking smile that lit up her features. "Cooking for Lily brings me peace, Mr. Sterling. It reminds me that we are here, safe and alive."
"Ethan," he corrected softly, stepping closer. The proximity made Maya’s heart flutter, her breath catching in her throat. "I told you, no more 'Mr. Sterling.' You saved my daughter's life. You saved mine. We are equals."
Before Maya could respond, a soft chime signaled an incoming encrypted delivery at the penthouse terminal. Ethan stepped over to the control panel and picked up a heavy black envelope sealed with thick wax. There was no return address, only Maya’s full legal name written in sharp, jagged calligraphy.
Maya’s smile faded instantly. Her face turned pale as milk as her eyes locked onto the black envelope. She stumbled backward slightly, her hands trembling violently.
"Maya? What is it?" Ethan asked, his brows furrowing as his protective instincts flared instantly.
"It's... it's him," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible, laced with a visceral terror Ethan had never witnessed before, not even when facing Victoria’s wrath. "My past... it’s found me."
Ethan ripped open the envelope. Inside was a single high-gloss photograph showing Maya from five years ago, standing outside a dilapidated apartment building, alongside a rugged, scarred man whose cold eyes radiated pure malice. On the back of the photograph, a message was scrawled in red ink: ‘The maid became a queen, but dirt never washes clean. Pay 20 million by Friday, or the world learns who you really are.’
Ethan’s eyes turned to cold steel. "Who is this, Maya?"
Maya sank into a chair, her hands clutching her head as long-buried memories threatened to drown her. "His name is Carter Vance... Victoria’s estranged half-brother," she choked out, tears spilling over her lashes. "Before I worked for you, Ethan, I was forced into servitude by Carter’s illegal loan shark ring to pay off my late father's fraudulent debts. He... he is the reason I have these scars on my wrists."
She slowly pulled back her sleeves, exposing the faint, jagged white lines that Ethan had noticed months ago. "When I escaped his ring five years ago, he promised that if I ever tried to build a life of my own, he would destroy it. He framings innocent people, Ethan. He has records, fabricated legal documents... he can make the world believe I was an accomplice to his criminal empire!"
Ethan knelt before her, placing his hands firmly over her trembling knees. His dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute, unwavering resolve. "Look at me, Maya," he commanded, his voice deep and grounding. "Look at me."

Maya met his gaze, finding strength in the sheer fire burning within him.
"You are no longer that helpless girl forced to run," Ethan swore, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "Victoria tried to break us and failed. If her brother thinks he can use your pain to intimidate this family, he is about to learn the exact same lesson. You are protected by the unbroken shield of Sterling, Maya. Nobody touches you ever again."
