Chapter 4: The Unseen Puppeteer

Chapter 4: The Unseen Puppeteer

The private dining room at the Grand Regency Hotel was draped in dark velvet and polished mahogany. Sitting at the head of the long table was Arthur Vance, the patriarch of the Vance conglomerate and father to Victoria and Carter. His face was a mask of weathered stone, carved by decades of ruthless corporate warfare. Across from him sat Carter Vance, nursing a glass of bourbon, a bitter sneer playing on his lips.
"Victoria was a fool," Arthur growled, his voice resembling grinding stones. "She let her temper get the better of her, caught on security cameras like an amateur. Now she sits in a federal cell, and the Vance name is dragged through the gutter."
"Victoria was emotional," Carter agreed smoothly, leaning forward. "But I have something better than hidden cameras, Father. I have Maya’s past. Ethan Sterling thinks he’s an untouchable titan, but his newly minted public darling is built on a foundation of lies. I have forged affidavits claiming Maya was the mastermind behind my old money-laundering operations. If this hits the press, Sterling’s board of directors will remove him as CEO for harboring a criminal."
Arthur’s eyes narrowed with cold satisfaction. "Do it. Destroy her reputation first. Strip Sterling of his emotional anchor. When he is distracted trying to save his precious maid, I will initiate a hostile takeover of Sterling Enterprises stock. We will take his company, his wealth, and his dignity."
While the shadows aligned against them, Ethan was taking immediate countermeasures. Deep within the high-tech security floor of Sterling Tower, Ethan stood beside his chief head of security, Marcus, reviewing facial recognition feeds and digital paper trails.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported, tapping the holographic tablet. "Carter Vance didn't act alone. He recently received a wire transfer of fifty million dollars from an offshore account linked directly to Vance Global—Arthur Vance’s parent company. They are planning a coordinated assault: character assassination against Miss Maya combined with a stock raid on Sterling Enterprises."
Ethan smiled coldly, a predatory spark igniting in his eyes. "They think they are playing chess, Marcus. But they don't realize I built the board." Ethan turned to his legal advisor. "Prepare a quiet, counter-purchase of Vance Global’s debt bonds. If Arthur Vance wants a war of assets, I will liquidate his empire before the week is out."
Later that evening, Ethan returned to the penthouse. The atmosphere was peaceful on the surface, but the underlying tension was palpable. Lily ran up to Ethan, holding out a handmade paper crown. "Daddy! Look! I made a crown for Maya because she’s our princess!"
Ethan picked up his daughter, kissing her forehead softly before looking over at Maya, who was standing by the balcony, gazing out at the twinkling city skyline. Ethan walked over, placing Lily down to play, and stood beside Maya.
"You look distant," Ethan said quietly.
"I’m afraid, Ethan," Maya admitted softly, her shoulders tight. "Not for myself... but for Lily. You built a safe haven for her after her mother died. Every time my past raises its head, it puts a target on your back and hers. Maybe... maybe I shouldn't be here."
May you like
Ethan’s hand closed around hers, his grip warm and firm. "Don't ever say that, Maya. You are the reason Lily smiles when she wakes up. You are the reason this house feels like a home again. Whatever comes, we face it together. Do you trust me?"
Maya looked into his piercing, honest eyes, feeling her fear evaporate beneath the sheer strength of his conviction. "I trust you with my life, Ethan," she whispered.
