CHAPTER 3 : THE SHATTERED ILLUSION

CHAPTER 3 : THE SHATTERED ILLUSION

The sterile hum of the hospital room was a stark contrast to the absolute chaos that had erupted just hours prior at the Montgomery estate. Ethan sat beside Hannah’s bed, his strong hands gently cradling the tiny, fragile fingers of their newborn daughter, whom they had decided to name Hope. The name was a testament to the light she brought into the darkest night of their lives. Hannah was asleep, her breathing finally steady, the lines of agony on her face smoothed away by the profound peace of motherhood.

The heavy wooden door of the private suite creaked open, breaking the silence. Ethan looked up, his jaw instantly clenching. Standing in the doorway was Liam, Ethan’s older brother and Chloe’s husband. Liam looked like a man who had just survived a horrific car crash. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, and his eyes were red-rimmed and frantic.

"Ethan," Liam breathed, his voice cracking. "The police... they called me. They raided our townhouse. They said Chloe is in a holding cell. What is going on? She called me screaming something about a misunderstanding, about Hannah tripping."

Ethan stood up, his protective instincts flaring instantly. He stepped away from the bed, moving toward the hallway so their voices wouldn’t wake his wife and child. He pushed Liam gently but firmly out of the room, closing the door behind them.

"It wasn't a misunderstanding, Liam," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that sent a chill down his brother's spine. "Your wife didn't witness an accident. She caused it."

Liam shook his head, denial clouding his features. "No. No, Chloe can be difficult, she can be jealous of Hannah, I know that. But she wouldn't hurt a pregnant woman. She's family, Ethan!"

Without another word, Ethan pulled his smartphone from his pocket. He opened the encrypted security app and pressed play, shoving the screen into Liam’s hands.

Liam watched the high-definition footage in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the hospital corridor. He saw the malicious sneer on his wife's face. He saw the calculated, vicious kick aimed directly at Hannah’s swollen belly. He heard Hannah’s agonizing scream, and he saw Chloe’s pathetic attempt to cover it up when Ethan appeared.

The phone slipped from Liam’s trembling fingers, clattering onto the linoleum floor. All the color drained from his face as the devastating reality shattered his world. The woman he loved, the woman he had married, was a monster.

"I... I didn't know," Liam choked out, tears of absolute shame welling in his eyes. He leaned against the wall, burying his face in his hands. "My God, Ethan. I am so sorry. Is Hannah...? The baby...?"

"They are alive. No thanks to her," Ethan replied, his tone softening slightly as he saw his brother’s genuine devastation. "Liam, I love you. You are my brother. But Chloe is dead to me. If you stand by her, if you try to defend her in court with the Montgomery money, you and I are finished."

Liam lifted his head, his eyes burning with a sudden, fierce resolve that mirrored Ethan’s own. "I’m calling my lawyers right now," Liam stated firmly, his voice steadying. "Not to defend her. To file for immediate divorce. She won't see a single dime of our family's money for her defense. I will not let that poison remain in our family."

Ethan nodded, pulling his brother into a tight embrace. The Montgomery family was fractured, but the rotten branch had been severed. As they stood in the hallway, unified against the betrayal, Ethan knew the war was just beginning, but they had already won the most important battle.
