CHAPTER 11: TRIALS OF FIRE

Despite the courtroom victory, the danger had not entirely passed. Desperate to destroy the evidence before federal authorities could seize her servers, one of Victoria’s radical co-conspirators took a dangerous, criminal gamble.

Late that evening, a alarm sounded at the Hope Community Center's administrative annex. A fire had been deliberately set in the basement archive room, where years of legal and financial records were stored. Thick smoke quickly billowed through the lower levels of the building.

Liam, who was finishing late-night paperwork in his office, smelled the smoke immediately. He pulled the fire alarm and began evacuating the remaining night staff and security personnel.

"Get outside! Call 911!" Liam shouted to the receptionist, ushering her toward the emergency exits.

As the alarm blared, Liam realized that a night caretaker, an elderly man named Marcus, was still trapped in the basement maintenance room where the fire had originated. Without a second thought for his own safety, Liam grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprinted down the smoke-filled stairwell.

By the time Ethan arrived at the scene, fire trucks were pulling up with sirens blaring. Flames were shooting out of the basement windows.

"Where is Liam?" Ethan demanded, grabbing a firefighter’s arm.

"Someone is still inside the lower level!" the firefighter yelled over the roar of the flames.

Ethan didn't hesitate. Ignoring the warnings of the emergency crew, he soaked a jacket in water from a nearby utility hose and dashed through the side entrance into the burning structure.

Deep in the hazy basement, Ethan found Liam supporting the unconscious body of Marcus, coughing violently as dense smoke filled the corridor. A wooden beam collapsed behind them, blocking the main exit.

"Ethan!" Liam choked out, struggling to stay upright. "You shouldn't have come in here!"

"I'm not leaving my brother behind!" Ethan shouted back.

Together, using all their physical strength, Ethan and Liam lifted Marcus and navigated through the scorching heat toward a rear loading bay exit. They burst through the double doors into the cool night air just as the ceiling of the archive room gave way in a shower of sparks.

Paramedics rushed to attend to Marcus and Liam. As Liam sat on the bumper of an ambulance, receiving oxygen, Ethan stood beside him, placing a hand firmly on his shoulder.

"You saved his life, Liam," Ethan said, his voice filled with deep respect. "You proved who you truly are tonight."

Liam looked up, tears cutting tracks through the soot on his face. "I spent so long trying to fix my past mistakes, Ethan. Tonight, I finally feel like I did something right."
