CHAPTER 5 : THE WEIGHT OF JUSTICE

CHAPTER 5 : THE WEIGHT OF JUSTICE

The tension in the courtroom was suffocating as the jury filed back into the room after only three hours of deliberation. Ethan felt Hannah’s pulse racing through her fingertips. He leaned over and kissed her temple, whispering, "This is it. The nightmare ends today."

The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for affluent privilege, adjusted his glasses and looked toward the jury box. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the forewoman stated clearly, standing up.

Chloe’s defense attorney visibly tensed. Chloe herself was shaking like a leaf in a hurricane, her hands clasped together in a desperate, silent prayer to a universe that was no longer listening.

"On the charge of aggravated assault, how do you find the defendant?" "Guilty."

"On the charge of attempted fetal homicide, how do you find the defendant?" "Guilty."

The words echoed through the silent room like gunshots. Chloe let out a guttural, agonizing shriek, burying her face in her hands. The gallery remained dead silent, captivated by the sheer weight of absolute justice falling upon a woman who thought her wealth made her untouchable.

The judge turned his piercing gaze toward the defense table. "Chloe Sterling, you have shown zero genuine remorse for your heinous actions. You attempted to use the very real, very serious condition of mental illness as a cheap shield for your own malicious vanity. Your actions were cowardly, cruel, and calculated."

The judge paused, letting his words sink in. "I sentence you to fifteen years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, a permanent restraining order is granted to the Montgomery family. You are hereby remanded to the custody of the state."

"No! Please! I have money! I have a life!" Chloe screamed as two bailiffs approached her, grabbing her arms and hauling her toward the side door that led to the holding cells.

Ethan watched her disappear into the shadows of the courthouse corridors. He felt no pity. He felt only the profound, cleansing relief of a massive burden being lifted from their shoulders. He turned to Hannah, who was crying tears of joy and closure. Liam, sitting a few rows back, offered a solemn, respectful nod. The family had survived the poison, and they had emerged stronger.
