CHAPTER 4 : THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

CHAPTER 4 : THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY
Six months had passed since the horrific night in the grand foyer. Baby Hope had grown into a radiant, healthy infant with her mother’s bright eyes and her father’s resilient spirit. The Montgomery estate had been cleansed of Chloe’s toxic presence, but the final ghost of the past still needed to be exorcised in the courthouse.
The courtroom was packed to the brim with reporters, local socialites, and curious onlookers. The trial of Chloe Sterling—formerly Montgomery—had become a media sensation. The prosecution was pushing for maximum sentencing, citing the undeniable digital evidence of aggravated assault and attempted fetal homicide.
Chloe sat at the defense table, looking like a pale shadow of her former glamorous self. Her designer gowns had been replaced by a drab, gray suit. Her high-priced defense attorney, a slick man named Harrison Vance, was desperately trying to spin a narrative of severe psychological distress and temporary insanity.
Ethan sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Hannah’s hand tightly. Hannah looked breathtakingly elegant, her head held high, radiating a quiet, unbreakable strength.
"The defense calls Mrs. Chloe Sterling to the stand," Harrison Vance announced.
Chloe walked to the witness box, dabbing at her dry eyes with a tissue. Under her lawyer’s guidance, she spun a pathetic tale of feeling ostracized by the Montgomery family, claiming she was suffering from undiagnosed clinical depression that caused a momentary lapse in judgment.
"I just... I snapped," Chloe sobbed theatrically for the jury. "I didn't mean to hurt Hannah. I was just so overwhelmed. I'm a victim of my own fragile mental health!"
The jury looked unconvinced, but it was the prosecuting attorney, a sharp, unyielding woman named Sarah Jenkins, who truly dismantled the facade.
"Mrs. Sterling," Jenkins began during cross-examination, dimming the courtroom lights. "You claim this was a momentary lapse in judgment. Let's look at the evidence."
The massive screen in the courtroom flickered to life. But it wasn't just the footage from the foyer. Jenkins had subpoenaed Chloe’s private text messages and emails from the weeks leading up to the incident.
"Exhibit D," Jenkins announced. "A text message sent by you to a friend, three days before the assault. 'I am so sick of Hannah parading that pregnant belly around. She thinks she owns the family now. Someone needs to knock her off her pedestal.'"
The courtroom erupted into shocked gasps. The judge slammed his gavel repeatedly. "Order! Order in the court!"
Chloe turned ghost-white, shrinking into the witness chair. The false tears vanished, replaced by genuine, unadulterated panic.

"That... that was just venting!" Chloe stammered defensively.

"It was premeditation," Jenkins countered fiercely. "You didn't snap, Mrs. Sterling. You plotted. You let your bitter jealousy fester until it turned into violence against an innocent, unborn child and a defenseless mother. No more lies."
Ethan squeezed Hannah’s hand. The truth was fully exposed, laid bare for the entire world to see. Chloe’s mask wasn't just removed; it was smashed into a million irreparable pieces.
