Chapter 15: Echoes in the Dark

The news story exploded across social media within hours. In the modern age of rapid digital outrage, sensationalized headlines travelled ten times faster than complex truths. By nightfall, the hashtag #HopeExposed was trending nationwide.
Outside the gates of the Hope Foundation, media vans began parking along the perimeter, their bright halogen lights cutting through the darkness of the autumn night. Camera crews staked out the main driveway, eager to capture a glimpse of Ethan, Hannah, or Liam.
Inside the residence, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Ethan stood in the living room, watching the local evening news broadcast. The news anchor sat before a graphic showing Ethan’s face next to a giant red question mark.
"Public outrage continues to grow tonight following allegations of financial impropriety at the renowned Hope Foundation," the anchor announced smoothly. "Major corporate sponsors are already pausing their multi-million dollar pledges pending an independent inquiry."
Marcus Vance, the foundation's chief financial auditor, sat on the sofa with a leather briefcase on his lap. He looked distraught, adjusting his glasses nervously.
"Ethan, I’ve reviewed our public accounting statements three times tonight," Marcus said, his voice laced with panic. "On paper, our books are pristine. But the state oversight board just issued a formal subpoena for our raw transaction servers. If the servers contain the altered data that Liam discovered this afternoon, the auditors will see discrepancies that look like deliberate fraud."
"Then we don't give them altered servers," Ethan declared firmly, turning away from the television. "We give them the raw, uncorrupted backup drive stored in our off-site vault."
Marcus paused, a flicker of hesitation crossing his eyes before he quickly nodded. "Of course. The physical off-site vault in Upstate New York. I can drive up tonight and retrieve the hard drives myself."
"No," Liam’s voice echoed from the hallway archway. He stepped into the room, his eyes sharp and vigilant. "The off-site vault requires dual-key authentication. Ethan holds Key A. I hold Key B. Nobody goes to that vault alone."
Marcus offered a weak, polite smile. "Of course, Liam. I only suggested it to save time."
After Marcus left the residence to 'prepare the legal documentation,' Hannah walked into the room, having just put little Hope to sleep in her crib. She walked up to Ethan, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her cheek against his chest. Ethan immediately encircled her in a warm, protective embrace, resting his chin on her hair.
"Ethan, I’m scared," Hannah confessed, her voice barely a whisper in the quiet room. "We worked so hard to rebuild our lives after everything we went through. Hope is finally safe. Our home finally felt like a sanctuary. Why won't they leave us alone?"
Ethan tilted her chin up gently, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. His blue eyes burned with a steady, unbreakable fire.
"Because the work we are doing matters, Hannah," Ethan said with profound warmth and strength. "Shadows only fight back when the light gets too bright for them to hide. We didn't build this foundation on lies, and we didn't build it on luck. We built it on faith, on truth, and on an unshakeable promise to protect the helpless. No sensational headline can destroy what God has placed in our hearts."
Hannah took a deep breath, letting his conviction wash over her fear. She nodded, her eyes shining with renewed resolve. "What’s our next move?"
"Liam and I are going to the off-site vault tonight," Ethan said. "And while we are gone, I need you to do something even more crucial."
May you like
"Anything," Hannah replied.
"I need you to trace where Marcus Vance spent his time over the past thirty days," Ethan said softly. "Liam caught something on the security logs right before Marcus walked in. The IP address that breached our system didn't come from overseas. It came from an encrypted laptop inside this very house."
