Chapter 14 - SIX YEARS IN THE DARK The next morning, investigators examined the hidden cavity.
They discovered ventilation holes.
Food containers.
Old blankets.
Small toys.
A child's drawings.
The evidence showed something horrifying.
Leo had not been accidentally trapped.
Someone had built the space.
Someone had planned it.
Richard stood in the doorway.
His hand touched one of Leo's drawings.
A house.
Three figures.
A father.
A child.
And a woman standing far away.
Richard's voice broke.
"He drew this while he was here?"
Anna nodded.
"He remembered you."
Richard closed his eyes.
For six years, he had thought his son had forgotten him.
The truth was worse.
Leo had spent six years remembering a father who believed him dead.
Richard found Leo sitting by the window later that afternoon.
"Buddy."
Leo looked up.
Richard sat beside him.
"Why didn't you stop recording?"
Leo looked at the floor.
"Because I knew someday someone would find me."
Richard pulled him into his arms.
"You were always waiting?"
Leo nodded.
"Every day."
