Chapter 17 - THE SECOND RECORDER Leo reached beneath his mattress.
His fingers closed around something cold.
A second black recording device.
One nobody knew existed.
He held it in the moonlight.
For a moment, the frightened child who had once lived behind the wall seemed to disappear.
Leo pressed PLAY.
A man's voice whispered:
"Victoria is taking the fall."
Leo froze.
The voice continued.
"She doesn't know I'm still inside the Astor operation."
Leo's eyes narrowed.
Another voice answered:
"By Christmas, the Astor empire will belong to me."
The recording stopped.
Leo sat perfectly still.
He looked toward the bedroom door.
Then toward the window.
His breathing became faster.
Someone else was involved.
Someone powerful.
Someone close enough to know what had happened.
