Chapter 9 - EVERYTHING Anna crouched beside Leo.
"What did you record?"
The boy looked toward Victoria.
"Her."
Victoria lunged forward.
"Give me that!"
Richard stepped between them.
"Don't touch my son."
Victoria stopped.
Leo held the recorder against his chest.
"She told me to keep it."
Richard's voice became quiet.
"Why?"
"She said nobody would believe me."
Anna felt a chill.
Richard looked at the device.
"Can it still play?"
Leo nodded.
Anna found a connection cable in the renovation equipment.
Within minutes, she had connected the recorder to the mansion's audio system.
The ballroom was now completely silent.
Hundreds of people stood watching.
Richard held Leo against him.
Victoria stood near the staircase.
Her breathing became faster.
Anna pressed PLAY.
A man's voice filled the mansion.
"He survived the emergency. He's weak, but there's a chance."
A gasp moved through the crowd.
Richard's face went white.
Then Victoria's recorded voice answered.
Cold.
Controlled.
"That isn't good enough."
Richard closed his eyes.
