Chapter 10 - THE KEY IN THE LOCKET Rachel had given Ethan the silver locket shortly before she died.
Michael had always thought it was sentimental.
Now he realized Rachel had hidden something inside.
Through the watch microphone, he heard Vanessa slap Ethan.
Michael's face hardened.
“Drive faster.”
Daniel did.
Carter Industries rose ahead like a wall of glass.
Reporters filled the lobby.
The board vote had already begun.
Henry's keycard opened the executive elevator.
The doors closed.
Thirty-eight.
Thirty-nine.
Forty.
Then the elevator stopped.
Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.
“You brought Lily.”
Michael looked at the camera.
“She’s my daughter.”
“She’s evidence.”
The elevator dropped.
Lily screamed.
Daniel ripped open the emergency panel.
The brakes caught after three floors.
They climbed into a maintenance corridor.
Above them, Vanessa was speaking to the board.
“Michael Carter is unstable.”
Applause.
Robert looked at Michael.
“They're listening.”
Michael climbed.
They reached the boardroom ventilation opening.
Ethan sat beside Vanessa.
The silver locket lay on the table.
Vanessa opened it.
A tiny brass key was hidden inside.
She inserted it into a black case.
The lid opened.
Inside were stock certificates.
Rachel had owned the controlling shares.
And she had transferred them to her children.
Vanessa's plan became clear.
If Michael lost custody, she could control everything.
Then Lily pushed open the vent.
